Rise of First World by Christopher Katava is a fun and interesting read. The protagonist is compelling and easy to identify with. The world is well-constructed, the plot full of unexpected twists and turns. I was quickly drawn in and had a hard time putting it down. Subplots filled with mystery and romantic tension keep the pace moving enjoyably forward. The characterization is fantastic. I especially enjoyed the portrayals of the two female characters, both strong and complex women with a good amount of depth.
The writing of this book is almost poetic, i enjoyed a lot, the expressions are beautiful and full of meaning. The story is easy to understand and appeal to imagination.
It was not an easy read for me, was not my first language, and I did not realize how much I would learn about English in this book. Many times I had to read and reread, because finding the meaning of the expressions made me lose to thread of the story. But it was worth it.
I found very beautiful expressions that I hope to keep in mind (I pointed out many in the book!) And they express great sensitivity, in my opinion. Well done !!!!
This fantasy novel was well written and the plot twists kept me reading one more chapter before turning in for the night. Judging from what I've read in the past, fantasy novels tend to include too many characters with strange names. This one had just enough characters to keep the story moving forward without having to return to the beginning chapters to try to remember who "that person" is again. The description of the world and travels of Iain were beautifully done, I thought. The female characters were kick ass and made Iain's quest very interesting. I also enjoyed the moral and spiritual lessons offered in this book. It made it worth while for me. Overall, it's a fun and easy book to read. I recommend it.
This was a really great story - it starts with a "coming of age" view with a young man chaffing at the restrictions placed on his life. As the story progresses, you can see his growth. He learns to see from his father's point of view but can also see some of its shortfalls. He accepts a "quest' from his father and gets the adventure and more, I look forward to reading more of this author's work.
It was a joy to read from the first page through to the end. The author has an excellent style of putting thoughts into words relevant to the story, which moves quickly along, but not so fast that the reader is lost. It flows very comfortably, and reminds me of the classical style of writing before the days of computers. It was a total pleasure to read, and I recommend it to all who enjoy reading fantasy. In the fantasy setting, we are still able to identify with the main character, Iain. He deals with modern literary themes by learning to understand parallel universes. I look forward to his next novel, or any of his writings in other genres.
This is a powerful and well written tale, one that pulls the reader into the world effortlessly. My only complaint is that the story had to end.;) Rise of the First World is well written and the author has created an incredible world (worlds!) that are well thought out and contain fantastic characters and imagery. I highly recommend this book!
I loved this book!! I am a very visual person and the way the author describes the characters in the scenes, took me right into the story. I highly recommend this novel and look forward to futures books by Christopher Katava.
Although this type of book isn't my genre I found it engaging and entertaining with a little mystery, romance, intrigue, and life lessons. The characters are great. I really enjoyed the book and didn't want to stop reading it during my lunch breaks. The three other reviewers said it well. I was pleasantly surprised by the writing talent of this young author and hope to see more books from him.
