Anything by this author is fantastic and this one just proves that point! I love Tori and Sam and was glad to read more about them. I liked the introduction of new characters. This was a really good story and kept me on edge enough to keep those pages turning at a fast pace. Now on to the 3rd book in the series!!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Definitely not her best

The main characters from Gerri Hill's previous book Hunter's Way reappear in this sequel. Homicide detectives Tori Hunter and Samantha Kennedy, who are partners both at work and at home, are still trying to clarify their new relationship when they are called in to investigate a controversial case. A popular priest is found murdered and naked in the rectory and a sex scandal threatens to engulf the Catholic Church and the Dallas political structure. Dead bodies begin to mount up as attempts are made to cover up the story and authorities try to force the police to close a case that really hasn't been solved. The situation becomes more stressful when Tori and Samantha are separated by the department and put in different divisions. The pressure from their professional lives and the disruption to their private lives threatens their relationship. Tori finds herself battling public relations experts, the police department and City Hall by herself as she tries to settle the crime and adjust to not having Samantha with her on the job. Each clue leads in a new direction and Tori wonders if she has finally encountered the case that can't be resolved.

In the Name of the Father is a way to spend an afternoon reading. If you're a Gerri Hill fan, you'll enjoy catching up with the characters from the previous book; however, this is not one of Hill's better books. The plot never clicks. The reader never really cares that this priest was murdered and there's no connection with the other characters. Tori seems to have been weakened from the figure she was in Hunter's Way and the relationship with Samantha doesn't progress in this book. What Hill does well is to keep the solution to the murders a puzzle until the end of the book and there is a quirky twist to the end of the book that is rather nice. If you're a Gerri Hill fan, you can tolerate this book. If this is the first Hill book you're reading, don't let it keep you from trying the others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doesn’t have much of Sam and Hunter, but still a good read

An interesting mystery throughout the book. It didn’t have as much with Sam and Hunter, but a new dynamic with Casey was established and it was nice to see Hunter with new friend dynamics. It was a little shorter, but the arc of the storyline worked well since everything was set up in book 1. Excited to see how book 3 takes it home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Follow up to Hunters Way

I think the people who didn't like this as a follow up for Hunter's Way should relax a bit. It wasn't at all bad. And let me say it did have romance in it.
It did continue Tori's and Sam's relationship, it wasn't the focus but I think it was good this way. Tori finally get a really close friend from someone who wasn't in Hunter's Way. New characters come into this. Tori finds someone she's comfortable with besides Sam but not in a threatening way.
I read the follow up to this, Partners, and thought it was amazing. That book doesn't focus on Tori and Sam as much either but they are BIG part of it as well.
So i do believe this was a great follow up for Hunters Way and this is coming from someone who strictly reads romances.
In the end all three books come together nicely.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in VA

I want to start by stating that I love Gerri Hill's writing; One Summer Night, Dawn of Change, Sierra City and Artists Dream are all classics to me. My fav??? Hunters Way! I was estatic when I learned there was going to be a sequel. All the hype during the long wait to publishing and finally the book is on the shelf and guess what? It was a big letdown. Two stars is all I can honestly give this slow-paced story. This story was so passive and slow-moving that I practically fell asleep several times. The usual drama and excitement were not ingredients used in this particular recipe. This book was NOT as bad as The Cottage which was a total bomb from beginning to end. (Lord, I wanted to jump off a bridge.) If you are a Gerri fan like myself, I will not shoo you away from reading this sequel, but I can't in all honesty recommend to anyone. Gerri is among my favorite 3 authors and I'm loyal. I'm not going to catagorize her with S. King (just cranking out stuff from his desk drawer that didn't fly back in the day, but will today because he has made a name for himself) and will read whatever she writes in the future. But I do have my limits. Rootin' for you, Gerri.

3.0 out of 5 stars a formatting disaster

This book is well written, and I enjoy the characters in the series, but I'd be pissed if I payed $3 for a book with this many formatting errors. Having paid $10, I'm rather more furious. There are tons of orphaned hyphens, no paragraph spaces between changes in scene or POV so it's really hard to figure out what is going on and where you are, and in many places there are two lines of dialogue from two different speakers with only one dialogue tag in a single paragraph, so you have to stop and figure out who is speaking. No wonder my library doesn't have this title and it's not on the list of books they can get.

3.0 out of 5 stars At least it's better than "The Cottage"

I know, I know...it's not as good as the first book, "Hunter's Way." This one wasn't that bad...it just couldn't live up to the hype.

The story was topical (a priest who's having an affair with another priest is murdered). The diocese brings in a flack (Marissa) to deal with the press...and the flack is lesbian to boot!

Not much was done with this book regarding the advancement of Tori and Sam's relationship. Much ado about politics and a politico's secret was the order of the day.

Kudos to Gerri for creating Casey O'Connor. Casey and Tori paired up neatly once Sam was off to do some out-of-state training for the police force.

And I wonder just how much of an investigation could be swept under the carpet...an interesting puzzle to ponder.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not What I've Come to Expect

first off I LOVE Gerri and her work. This one was disappointing for one reason. Where was the romance? I realize the two lead love interests already found one another in 'Hunter's Way'. But either you keep their romance evolving by exploring more of their pasts and how it affects their present or you introduce a new romantic pair. That was what I thought was going to happen with the introduction of Casey (who I love!). If the case they had to work on was more fleshed out and interesting I wouldn't have mind so much. And the ending was abrupt and out of character for Tori (at least in my opinion). Will I read this again? Maybe. Do I recommend it? I would just with a warning. This is not a typical Gerri Hill story.

I have really grown fond of the Gerri Hill, Tori stories. They're fun and an a quick, easy read. There is the hint of suspense and a little bit of a riddle to solve mixed in with a bit of romancing and seduction too which adds to the fun.
'In the name of the father' is well worth the read if you are a Tori Hunter fan. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Ending to the Series

This was a great series by Gerri Hill. There are three books in this series and if I'm not mistaken this is the last one in the trilogy. You won't want to skip over the first two because they are also quite the read. Gerri Hill rarely disappoints with her way of writing and she definitely exceeded my expectations when I first started reading her work. Very well written all three of them. Although the end kind of leaves you hanging a bit which I really did hate.

I was surprised at the ending. But wow it was great. I loved how this book flowed I couldn't put it down. This is such a great series to own. I felt it was really well written, just enough romance to let us know the characters still loved eachother. New friendships bloomed at a good pace. The plot wasn't easy to figure out which I loved.

2.0 out of 5 stars A little underwhelming

I was a big fan of the first novel Hunter’s Way and forgave it despite its whiplash inducing pov shifts.
I cared deeply for Tori, Sam and their little team.
Of course, wanting to read more about their adventures I bought this novel.
It seems more like a backdoor pilot for the next novel rather than a continuation.
While some people might like it, I found the ‘mystery’ boring and the story coasting on the goodwill of the last book.
If you’re invested in the nitty, gritty procedural of the last book and not the characters, then this one’s for you.
But if you’re like me and fell in love with Tori and Sam? Stay away, you may be disappointed in your purchase.

It was fantastic! I am usually good at guessing who did what and why, before the end. This one kept me guessing til the end. I enjoyed the new characters and the ending was nothing short of brilliant! Great second book in the series...the last 4 chapters will make you smile if you enjoy seeing someone admitting and giving in to their humanity. Another one well done!
