5.0 out of 5 starsWhen's the MOVIE coming out? And the SEQUEL?

Usually I can eat up 300 some pages in a day or two... but after a false start when I was ridiculously busy, once I started this book I didn't want it to end, so I rationed myself to a little each night and then fell asleep with these wonderful images in my mind, knowing I could do the same again the next night and the next. Alas, I finally finished it and I'm greedy for more. Meanwhile, it's 10,000 years in the future and genetic engineering has solved EVERYTHING (people are "melded" with animal and plant genes... they can fly and photosynthesize) except... well it hasn't. There are plenty of hanging threads... I hope O'Toole is working on Volume 2. So many avenues left to explore.
5.0 out of 5 starsTravel thousands of years into a genetically engineered Earth

Julie O’Toole’s book offers an exciting glimpse at a future that pushes the boundary of reality yet seems believable. It says a lot about human nature, for better and for worse, how we might improve it and how we might not be able to change. I especially love the descriptions of a verdant planet and rich and wonderful use of vocabulary throughout.

Dr. O'Toole has created a unique post-apocalyptic world in which a repetition of the disastrous wars that almost destroyed civilization is prevented by genetic engineering of the human species. The resulting creatures, with a few genetic and electronic enhancements of the original human type, live peaceful lives carefully guided in all their details by a risk-averse hierarchy. But when something goes wrong it takes some heroic individual action to set things right. In the process, lives are no longer carefully guided and the result is some explosive raw emotion, especially as engineered humans find they have to deal with some remnants that avoided being engineered. An engaging story that has an intellectual bonus as it explores the strengths and weaknesses of a utopian vision of the future.

I love science and when it's combined with a compelling and evocative tale, it's impossible to put down! The author's vivid descriptive writing creates a future where humans are genetically melded with other species to extend life and bring out the best traits for survival of humankind. But, something goes amiss and complacency allows a deeply hidden and tenacious trait to re-surface. Five young men on a coming-of-age adventure are jolted into a fight for survival, aided by encounters with strong female characters. But, it's not over til it's over, and this book reveals unexpected surprises in the final chapters!
