4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet classic romance, very enjoyable

This is a romance about introverts, for introverts. I loved the sweet misunderstandings and false starts of the romance. I agree with the other reviewers in one respect - the dog is my favorite character in the book, but not because I disliked or couldn't relate to the other characters. I also loved the over the top outgoing and gregarious Jackie - every socially reluctant person needs a Jackie in their life.

This is a sweet classic romance with no explicit scenes. The conflicts are internal rather than external, which is what the other reviewers disliked. I found the book enjoyable and entertaining.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interrelationships on your journey to love and happiness

Sheri Richey author of the Eden Hall series ( five books), has ventured publications before. She says about the series:

"I know when you meet this warm unique family, you will want to follow each of them on their individual journey to discovering what Eden Hall means to them and how the strength of their alliance helps them each find love and happiness.

The theme of this new release, Willow Wood is also about a life's journey and how events impact on interrelationships and the quest for love and happiness.

The setting is Carlton, Ohio.

Nolan Ramsey thinks he wants to be alone. He leaves his life in the city, leaves his job as a news reporter, and buys a house in the middle of nowhere. He plans a life of complete isolation with just his dog, Scuba, for company. Calinda Willow returns home to help her aging father at the end of his life. She copes with the loss by throwing herself into her work, rejects social invitations from her friend, Jackie, and thinks she is content with her solitary life. They are both wrong.

This is a contemporary life story of a man who had to cope with the stress caused by his past , his desire to recuperate lost opportunities . He is committed to writing his story.

It is a story of retraction from life and its pleasures where guilt, misundersandings influence the development of a love relationship. Something like self-punishment and low expectations, as misguided self - worth and the feeling of rejection undermining the thoughts of love.

Excerpt:

Calinda placed her finger over his lips when she saw he was going to interrupt her. “That’s why I didn’t try to call when you stopped contacting me. I didn’t want to intrude. I thought you were too busy for me.”

"Driving home Calinda thought about why she lost Nolan. She had begun their relationship on an open honest level, but then the door had closed. She’d never shared her feelings again and when he had to dive into his work, she had withdrawn. She knew she did it, so she wouldn’t interfere, but seeing it from his side, she knew it looked like she just didn’t care. And when he was struggling with leaving for the tour, she had done and said all the wrong things. Her intentions may have been good, but she hadn’t handled it well."

Nolan wondered why wasn’t she calling him? Why wasn’t she worried about not hearing from him? Maybe something had happened to her? From longing, to anger, to worry, he now thought his initial concern was correct. She just didn’t care.

The story is well-written for easy reading. Nothing special is particularly standing out.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay story

This book is well written, but the story quickly becomes tedious. There is no real conflict in the story line other than both of the main characters' crippling insecurities. I didn't really like either character. In fact, my favorite character was the dog.

The story needed some major obstacle to their getting together other than just their inability to communicate and/or commit and some real emotion somewhere. I kept reading, hoping to find something like this, but it never happened.

It was hard to feel anything but irritation for the whiny characters who didn't want to stand up for themselves or what they wanted.

The author's writing style was fine, but she needs to find a way to infuse some emotion and substance into her stories.

If you're looking for a light read for the beach, this might work for you.

Willow Wood: A Sweet Small Town Romance kind of tells you what it is in the title: sweet, and somewhat small. This isn't a complaint, it is just a fact. This isn't going to be a book that changes your life, nor do I really see it being one that someone wants to read a second time.
Instead, it is a somewhat fluffy book that is good enough to warrant a read. I found that it is more of a character study than actually a book - the plot curve is a big stagnant for me. I kept waiting for the story to pick up and, by and large, it really didn't. It felt more like a snipper or a book or a prelude to a bigger story.
I did finish it, but I just felt a bit let down by it all.
I will say that the copyediting was good.

4.0 out of 5 stars A new take

This is a romance, total "chick flick" type. It's the love story of two people who don't want to be in love (until of course they meet and that changes everything). What is unique about this story is that both characters are introverted, unlike most romances there is an outgoing go getter. The conflicts presented are internal in nature, developing not from the outside world but their own minds. As a result, it's very relatable and not as unrealistic feeling as other romances. Glad I picked it up

3.0 out of 5 stars Overall flat characters but good plot

Both Nolan Ramsey and Calinda Willow believe that they're both content with their solitary lives. Nolan has a job in the city, kept company by his dog. Calinda cares for her aging dad, distracting herself with work. But perhaps being alone isn't all it's cracked up to be. This book is mostly plot driven, and while it works as a romance, the characters felt a bit flat. Readers looking for a beach read or entertaining romance will still thoroughly enjoy this story.

If I had seen this book in a store, that "come-on" on the cover would not have sold me. I'm glad I ordered it, except the small size was the result of fine print. The two main characters were much deeper than I expected, going through things any of us might experience.
