5.0 out of 5 starsLoved the honesty of the main characters!

This was the first book that I read by this author. After reading it, I went back and read all of the other books in this series. It’s that good. What stands out the most to me was the raw honesty between the hero and heroine. No BIG misunderstandings due to secrets and lies. I also appreciated that neither the hero nor heroine were titled. (I’m really over dukes right now). Very good romance with just the right touch of mystery.

Devlin Drake plots revenge against Hannah Bromfield, the Baron’s daughter. He wagers his estate against marriage to the Baron’s daughter and wins her on the roll of the dice. When he goes to collect his bride, he is given the daughter no one knew about.
Juliet Duval’s mother died six years ago and her father took her in as an unpaid servant. In an attempt to plant her as a spy to retrieve some mysterious letters, he marries her off to Devlin Drake, a monster.
What will happen to these two strangers—one who marries to escape her hideous family and the other who marries for revenge? I Highly Recommend this second book in Adele’s superb series ‘Avenging Lords’, filled with lies, secrets, schemers, spies, horrible relatives, amazing plot twists and a Fabulous ending.
I really enjoyed reading about Devlin and Juliet. Both characters had plenty of integrity and you couldn't help but like them from their very first meeting. I love books where the main characters are completely honest with each other and you don't have to endure all of those big misunderstandings. The mystery was good and even though I was very suspicious of one character I never really figured out exactly what was going on until it was revealed. I would like to have seen a few different locations as they were only at her house and then his house. Now I'm looking forward to Valentine's story!
4.0 out of 5 starsJust enough mystery and a great H/h couple in historical England

What an enjoyable read all the way. I so appreciate romantic characters being honest with each other from the start -- okay, a couple of quick blips with this but these did not last. Devlin Drake is out for revenge. Juliet Duval is out to escape her evil family. Not a great start to a marriage. Woven together are a great HEA and a family mystery without incredible stress for me, the reader. Highly recommended for lovers of historical romance with a touch of mystery.
5.0 out of 5 starsloved seeing these two grow together

After spending the last five years making his fortune in India, Devlin Drake has returned to England bent on revenge against Miss Hannah Bromfield for the hateful lies she's been spreading about his late brother since his mysterious death. The best punishment he can think of is to make the lady suffer daily as his wife, even if it means giving up his hidden dream of marrying for love. Devlin knows the despicable lady will never accept him so he determines to win her hand in a bet against her father.
Baron Bromfield's illegitimate daughter, Miss Juliet Duval, has suffered Ms. Bromfield's wrath and the Baron's censure since she moved into their house upon her mother's death six years ago. She lives as an unpaid servant until her father's reckless wager requires a daughter for satisfaction, for which he is all too eager to use Juliet.
Hulking, self-assured Devlin and dainty, loving Juliet couldn't be more opposite and though they're thrown together in marriage for all the wrong reasons, it soon becomes clear that they're exactly what the other needs. This is only more apparent as they work to unravel the mysteries of the past and ensure their future together.
This was a lovely story and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm always a fan of the hero coming to the defense of an abused heroine, especially when it's her own family who have mistreated her. I'm here for the just desserts. It was lovely to see Juliet gain confidence and I really appreciated the honesty between her and Devlin and how they worked so well together without a ton of angst between them. I'm looking forward to Valentine's story now.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Devlin and Juliet did not know what they needed in life to be happy. And surprisingly they needed each other. Juliet helped heal Devlin's anger and heart. Devlin helped Juliet understand that she was worth more than maid. I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked this book. I love discovering another author that I have to read all her work. I look forward to reading more from Adele.

Devlin is out for revenge. Since his brother’s mysterious death, the cruel and devious Miss Bromfield has taken to spouting vicious lies and spreading vile gossip. Devlin vows to make her pay. How better to punish her than to make her his wife and make her life miserable. Knowing she would never accept him, Devlin devises a plan to get her to the altar. He will win her hand in a bet, but he must accept he will never know true love. His fortunes turn when offered another tempting option. Thrown together in an odd twist of fate Devlin and Juliet are mismatched in every regard. He is a hulking figure of a man, powerful and commanding. She is dainty and petite, used to obeying her father, and despising masterful men. Yet both quickly become what the other needs and together must battle against those determined to tear them apart. - Two lonely people discover that true love does not have to be perfect. Juliet has lots of integrity and Devlin is impressed with her from the beginning. Some are intimidated by Devlin’s size, but he makes Juliet feel protected. Devlin and Juliet are great together. It is good to see them working together and their relationship develop. This is an excellent historical romance-mystery. The story is interesting, and I enjoyed the characters. .

5.0 out of 5 starsFantastic second book in a new series!!

A Wicked Wager is the second instalment of Adele Clee’s Avenging Lords series. It absolutely can be read as a stand alone if you have not read the first one. Devlin Drake is out for revenge. His elder brother has died in mysterious circumstances 3 years ago whilst Devlin was abroad and has been heavily maligned by his former fiancée Miss Hannah Bromfield miring his memory in scandal. Devlin is desperate to clear his brother’s name and also get to the bottom of how he died. The only person that can provide this information is Miss Bromfield. Devlin’s desire to extract his revenge and make Miss Bromfield’s life interminable leads him to wager her father Baron Bromfield for his daughter’s hand in marriage. He wins the wager but he does not get what he bargained for! Miss Juliet Duval has been living as an unpaid maid of all work in her father’s household for the last six years. Being the illegitimate daughter of the uncaring Baron Bromfield, she is stunned to suddenly learn that she is to be married to Devlin Drake – the brother of the man her sister so unfairly defamed. Craving affection and a loving marriage, can she tolerate living with this bear of a man for the rest of her life? Devlin and Juliet have to make the best of their unexpected union whilst dealing with her villainous family and try to get to the bottom of the mystery. I really enjoyed this book. The story grips you from the beginning and the reader joins Devlin and Juliet as they slowly uncover the clues and solve the mystery. There are unexpected twists and I certainly wouldn’t have thought at the beginning exactly what the secret was. Devlin was a great hero – obsessed initially with thoughts of revenge he nevertheless quickly realises his luck in finding Juliet. Strong and honourable yet gentle and never cruel – although he had opportunity to be. Juliet is a wonderfully refreshing heroine. I loved her kind nature – despite having such a horrible life with her family, she is optimistic about her circumstances with Devlin. She has a wonderfully honest nature and I liked the fact that any secrets between them were very quickly resolved and dealt with openly. They shared a really sweet friendship along with an intense attraction. They were even sweet in appearance as a couple. Devlin being described as a bit of a man mountain and the petite Juliet. I love mismatched couple’s that end up perfect for each other! It was lovely to catch a glimpse of Greystone and Lydia from the first book and of course Dariell. We are introduced to Lord Valentine – whose story I am now equally looking forward to. I definitely recommend this to all.

As usual with an Adele Clee story I was gripped from the first page. I enjoyed the first in the series and this second book was equally as good. I like that there is a mystery to be solved and a few villains to contend with. The main characters of Devlin and Juliet were extremely likeable. They both had issues with their background but I loved the connection between the two of them. What a life Juliet had endured with her father and half sister! I liked the camaraderie between Devlin and his friends. In this book we met more of his close friends and I’m looking forward to reading their stories, should be fascinating.

It was o.k., but not my style. Too many sex scenes which added nothing to the story, but I know some readers like this, however some advance warning would have been good. The plot was very involved and it was confusing as to who was related to whom and if they were legitimate or not. In particular, if the villainous baron was descended from someone illegitimate, how come he was a baron? Possible, but unlikely, and never explained.

I found this a really good book. Juliet is a really strong character and shows her worth to her husband who treats her better than her family does. Devlin Drake wants revenge for the scandalous lies that have been told about his deceased brother. He plots revenge by attempting to make Miss Bromfield’s whole life a misery by marrying her via a wager. He gets Juliet instead but she is twice the lady and makes him very happy. Can they find true love or will the secrets tear them apart.
