This book was a fantastic read! Though the book may take a few chapters to draw the reader it, it does capture attention, compelling the reader to race to the end of the book and on to the next! This book is filled with strands of adventure, touches of romance, pools of regret, and even whispers of defeat. Without any terrifying gore, or cursing or inappropriate content, this book fulfills the expectations that anyone could have in a book. As such, it stands as a novel that will enthrall anyone from teens to grandparents. In short, this book is well worth the $5 on kindle or the $15 for paperback, and will remain on my shelf awaiting many more readings in the future!
Once I started reading, I just couldn't stop. Picking up twenty years after the first installment's completion, I found it effortless to jump back into the world of Myriad and its host of characters. I did have to reorient myself with some of the minor characters but the plot keeps you informed. I didn't particularly enjoy a couple points of view (Particularly Ariana's, being in first person, and her purpose seemed only linked to the information I was provided with on the back cover), but overall, I loved this novel and am now in desperate need of the next one ;) Well done, Mr. Batson!
Honestly my favorite book I've ever read. I've read most of what Wayne Thomas Batson has written and I've loved each one. Many of his stories I have read again years later. Of all those stories, this is my favorite. I love the fantastical yet relatable characters, their interactions and the extensive world building. I have been unable to wait for the sequel for a long time now.
Fast pace. Great action. In a fantasy world brought to life by engaging descriptions, battles, swordfights, dragons and more!
Batson has introduced amazing characters in this second book. The Errant King is a true hero: kind, fierce, fledgling, strong, brave, etc. And Ariana! A swordswoman, huntress, determined young woman who feels women can take on significant roles. Her spunk and spirit will encourage many readers to go ahead and try to be what they long to be.
My absolute, most favorite, part of this book is the creation of the Venture Board. A game of sort for an entire community. I'm so tempted to give a spoiler but will let you read for yourself.
I highly recommend this second book in the Myridian Constellation series.
Wayne Thomas Batson has been one of my favorite authors for a long time, and his Door Within trilogy, Isle Books, and Berinfell Prophecies has captured my imagination as well as inspired my Christian journey. This series has a different tone than the others. It’s much deeper, a bit darker, and stays with you longer. The antagonists, for instance (while forgettable in other books) really get your attention. The characters are believable, their struggles a mirror to reality, and their victories all the more satisfying.
Speaking of characters, I really enjoyed the young prince Lachlan. He’s different from most fantasy royals. I played a game of darts recently, and could think only of him!
I recommend this book to more mature readers who enjoy high fantasy (and in the mood for an intense read). It has its lighthearted moments, which are fun, and adventure, which is exciting! But what sets this one apart are all the times you pause to think about Batson’s world, and compare it with your own.
