I got 1/3rd of the way through and had to double check the author. I've purchased several of her books before and really liked them. I've read all of the Emperor's edge books and they were pretty good.
This book is a romance novel and that's it. There's nothing wrong with a romance novel if that's what you are looking for, but this is just bad. It's as if the characters are in their teens and this is their first relationship. Pages and pages of flirty banter back and forth with each wondering "does she like me", "does he like me". They are grown adults BTW. Even when some urgent matter occurs it takes pages for them to do anything. At one point when the King had an issue it took them 9 pages of banter to leave a room.
As to the story line, the lack of intelligence is astounding. So, one of the main characters gets a magical item taken away from her. This item is relatively common but very expensive. She's now working for the king and doesn't bother to ask if he has one she can borrow. Really!!!
If I could get a refund I'd ask for it. I'm putting this down and going to read some Patricia Briggs, N.C. Reed or Marc Alan Edelheit.
I'll try to finish it later. If it gets any better I'll edit my review.
