"Everyone knows my story, don't they? It is all they talk about. The Duke of Tyndale and His Tragedy. It is practically folklore."

FINAL DECISION: These characters end up being just so nice and I liked them tremendously. The contrast being their so good character and how they meet gives what might otherwise be a too nice story some dash.

THE STORY: Matthew Cornwallis, Duke of Tyndale, is urged by his friends to put aside his grief at the death of his fiancee three years ago and attend the Donville Masquerade, a sinful gathering where masked guests meet for sexual encounters. There Tyndale meets a masked stranger who he ends up spending the night with. Isabel Hayes is a widow whose elderly husband was chosen by her parents in an arranged marriage. Curious about what she missed in her marriage, Isabel comes to the Donville Masquerade to watch. But then she meets a masked stranger who tempts her to find the passion she missed. Eventually, however, Isabel realizes that her lover was the man engaged to her cousin and who her uncle blames for her death.

OPINION: I really, really liked the characters in this book. Both Matthew and Isabel are good and even gentle characters who find one another despite pasts which make them wary because the guards and shields are let down when they meet in a sinful and wicked way.

This book is hot and it manages to do that with very likable and nice characters. Although both have some pain in their lives, their inherent positivism contrasts with some of the other characters in the book who dwell in their unhappiness. I really liked that about these characters. The willingness to make the best of things, to look forward, to try and be happy.

Most of the conflict here ends up being external because these two hit it off almost from the start. In fact, they seemed so perfect for one another that I wondered how the dramatic tension in the story could be maintained -- and yet it was. All of the parts work here.

WORTH MENTIONING: I especially loved that we get to see so many of the members of the 1797 Club and their wives.

CONNECTED BOOKS: THE DUKE OF HEARTS is the seventh book in the 1797 Club series. The series tells the stories of a group of men destined to become dukes. Each book tells the story of one couple but the characters appear throughout the series. This book can be read as a standalone.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.

NOTE: I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in order to prepare this review. I was not required to write a review or to write a positive review. All opinions contained herein are my own.

Matthew Cornwallis feels responsible for the death of his fiancee. Isabel Hayes is a widow from a passionless marriage. They meet by accident at a masquerade meant for people to discover their sexuality; Isabel wants to find passion and Matthew needs to get back into life. Since they both wear masks, they don't realize that Isabel is the cousin of Matthew's dead fiancee whose father blames him for her death.
I've read the rest of the books in the series so far and found them a mixed bag. This one was one I didn't enjoy as much, partly because I think the masked encounter trope is a bit played. In this case, it led to a lot of lust, but I didn't feel a lot of love going on. Matthew and Isabel are fine, but didn't seem to have a real connection other than sex.
I'm enjoying the series, just didn't like this one as much.

I love the chemistry between the H and h, and the storyline is very interesting. It was satisfying to finally learn what happened to Michael’s fiancée. My biggest problem with this story - and the series in general so far - is the veiled and not-so-veiled misogyny that exists even among the supposed “enlightened” inner circle. I had to laugh at the censure that Isabel received for wearing a mask to a masquerade and choosing to keep her identity secret. But once you grind your teeth down over that detail, it is a very enjoyable installment to this series.

Book 7 of this great series did not disappoint was a very good read could not put it down. This story is about Matthew “The Duke of Tyndale” I can’t say my favorite as I love all the Dukes in this series. Matthew has a broken heart due to the death of the beautiful Angelica the woman he was to marry, though it happened several years in the past he still mourns her loss. His friends decide it’s time he has some fun in his life and take him to “The Donville Masquerade” which is really a sex club, where anything goes and does. There he meets a Miss Swan a beautiful petite dark haired widow, of course that’s not her real name and everyone is wearing masks to hide their real identity. Isabel Hayes is a young widow who was married to a much older man, she has desires that plaque her so she comes to the club to watch others living out their fantasy’s and when she meets Matthew she soon finds out what it’s like to have a young handsome man make love to her. The story takes off with lots of twists and turns and surprises. They soon find that they can’t stay away from one another, but will the memory of Angelica come between them. Well that’s all I can say you must read this book for yourself, I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I did. This is such a great series by Jess Michaels “The Duke of Hearts” sure won mine.

I love regency romances! I’ve read many of this author’s books and liked them, even loved some. This book was no exception. It had an intriguing premise - widow visits naughty masquerade to add some spice to her life before she remarries, only to meet and fall in love with a grieving Duke. The heroine, Mrs Isabel Hayes, was compelling - pretty, mature, and loyal, if a bit meek for me. The hero, Matthew, Duke of Tyndale, was also compelling - handsome and aristocratic. They had good chemistry and some sizzle. The storyline was a little too dark for me. Overall, a good book, and I look forward to the next one in the series.

When Matthew lost his fiancé in an accident over 3 years ago nothing anyone said or did could drag him out of his guilt. When he was asked to go the the scandalous masquerade, he would never have guessed he would meet a woman who has awaken his silent beast. Isabell a widow with no knowledge of passion seeks out the masquerade just to watch, she would never have thought to meet someone and participate until one night he came to her rescue. A wonderful read with some shocking loving behavior and a little danger. Love The 1797 Club books!

This is a series that improves the further you get into it and the more you read them , they age like a fine wine .
This is Mathew and lsabel’s story .
They both need love so Badly, it hurts to read their story .
Mathew has know death and heartache , and he feels he will never love again ,never have his own family .
Isabel is a widow , her first marriage was arranged and not a happy one .
Both looking for some excitement they meet each other in a Hell , what brings them together in that night ?
Maybe fate , maybe a higher power, whatever it is , the future is written and about to unfold with some tender and some tension building climaxes .
Wonderful book and series!
