4.0 out of 5 stars The Man Your Man Could Be

"Damian shot a smile to the woman across from him and allowed a single twinkle to bounce off his eye. They were the blue of a silver coin in the moonlight and silver like the bluest oceans, and experience had taught him that more than one twinkle could be too much."

Damian Stockwell is at it again in this third novel in the series, saving the world as only he can. With power, style, and more that a touch of arrogance. But don't blame him, it's hard enough being the peak of physical and mental perfection, without having to deal with ordinary people. After all, he has his servant Bertrand for that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stockwell strikes again!

Wallace delivers again, with the resounding and thrilling force that is Damian Stockwell. The world's strongest, smartest, most head-shakingly and hilariously self-unaware action hero is back in a brand new adventure that's a bit of a departure from the rest of the series. Mechanical Menace is a more cerebral look at Stockwell's adventures (though it still packs a wallop with plenty of exciting action scenes and, of course, all the various fighting styles and assorted pummelings you could ever want). And it's not just the main character who is more thoughtful in his tactics; it's also the author himself, whose painstaking historical research is obvious at every turn. Wallace dives head-first into the reality of historical moments and places in this book, lending a deep richness that isn't typically found in adventure comedies.

The Mechanical Menace finds Stockwell battling an insane assortment of hyper-intelligent, super-strong robots, a legion that's outfitted smartly for the period piece that this book is. Wallace somehow manages to give the robotic threat a new twist, despite the fact that the machinations are limited to early 20th century technology. Half the fun of this book is in exploring the development of the artificial enemies.

Like all the Stockwell books, Mechanical Menace is a quick-moving, fast-joking, lightning-punching joyride for the soul. I hope Wallace writes Stockwell books until he shrivels up and dies (which I mean in a very nice way).

Another entry in the affectionate parody of 30s Manly Men Doing Manly Things dime novels. I love these books, no long winded speeches (well, just one, but it is a product presentation at a World's Fair), no wordy expositions on How Deep My Character Is, nothing you have to read 97 times and do homework to interpret. It's as simple as 'there is a thing, I will punch that thing. I have punched that thing, now I will find out who sent the thing and punch them as well'.

Sometimes three books full of angst gets old, and you need a palate cleanser. Simple punchy violence, some humor, very much in the vein of the books that the Indiana Jones series was based on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stockwell is the hero for a new old America!

In Damian Stockwell, Benjamin Wallace has created a character who captures the pith and pulp of all the greatest cinematic heroes while layering in contemporary humor and full-blown action sequences. In Mechanical Menace, he's conquering self-learning automatons against the backdrop of the World's Fair and the perfume villages of France with his faithful companion and sidekick Bertrand in tow...their point-and-counterpoint interplay is really a knockout, as much slapstick exchange as it is true camaraderie. Somehow, I knew it would be a fun read, and now that I've gotten a taste for it, I'm going back for the others in the series. Well done, Mr. Wallace - thank you for bring the world a literary hero we can root for!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stockwell is the new Stockwell

Damian Stockwell is a parody of James Bond that at times becomes a parody of Damian Stockwell. It's hilarious, and it makes for a very light, very fun read. This leading character is full of memorable quotes such as:
"They're either getting smarter or they're becoming less stupid. I can't tell which."
The sex scene is equally snappy:
"As she passed by him, he added, 'I hope you're talking about sex.' She smiled like she was talking about sex."
There is no turning an action adventure into a steamy, detailed bedroom adventure here!

You may find yourself laughing out loud and/or snorting while reading this book. That's normal. Just make sure you aren't drinking any hot beverages at the time.

Sometimes progress is dangerous, a fact Stockwell learns in this epic adventure. Stockwell is Bond, Holmes and a Keystone cop all rolled up in one. If you are looking for a fun adventure with plenty of humor, look no further!
