I needed a moment of silence after this book. Wow. Simply wow. This book is so unique but even better than that-it’s superbly written. Each and every single character is well developed. You get a sense of good and evil in everyone including the main character. This book draws you in and closer to the end there were times I had to remind myself to breathe because it was so action packed. I have a tendency to skip sentences when reading because many authors fill their pages with unnecessary words, but I couldn’t do that with this book. I had to read every single line because they were all important. I didn’t want to finish the story-it was so good I was afraid that there was no sequel and Hester’s world would be complete. However, the story is so well told that it could have been just one book but I’M SO GLAD THERE’S ANOTHER BOOK!!! Interestingly enough, I love that this book does not have a happily ever after ending. It’s raw. There’s no nudity, cursing, lewd stuff. But it’s a dark story which makes sense when you remember that Hester is an agent for the dead. Her strength amazed and inspired me. I also love that even though it’s a “supernatural” book, she doesn’t have supernatural strength. In fact, she has more natural limitations than strengths. Her superpowers are her friends, her belief in her mission, and her determination. I’m simply blown away by this book and I feel blessed to have found it!!! I can’t wait to read the next two!!!
5.0 out of 5 starsSo Glad I Took a Chance on This Author

You've never met a heroine like Hester Grayson. Blind, albino, and mute, with parents who either despise or dismiss her, she's an unlikely sleuth and defender of the dead. But with paranormal abilities and divine antecedents, she's uniquely qualified to solve murders and help traumatized ghosts make peace with their deaths. But for all her abilities, Hester's blindness and inability to speak make her vulnerable to prejudices and superstitions of Victorian-era Colorado, and she suffers a great deal in her pursuit of justice for the dead. Her dedication and independent spirit help her survive, but she pays a heavy price. The story takes its time unfolding, so a little patience is called for. I found the author's world-building fascinating every step of the way. Veritas and its sequel, Spectris, are beautifully written. I can hardly wait for book three. Take a chance on this author -- you won't be disappointed.

This was a very well written, enjoyable book. The plot is easy to read, suspenseful, and has great characters in Hester and Sir Death. I don't want to give away too much of the story. Hester is a blind, mute, and incredibly smart Demigoddess. People around her underestimate her abilities until she proves to herself and to those around her that she is a force to be reckoned with. Highly entertaining book.
A friend recommended this book. When I read the summary I was certain it was not for me, but I read the first chapter after which I decided it was definitely not for me. I set it down and almost didn't pick it up again. LUCKILY for me I ran out of other books, and tried the next chapter and the next. I loved this book! I loved Hester Grayson! I cannot wait until the next book arrives. The story is an urban fantasy set in the last 1800s. The Character is great, story is intriguing and the prose is wonderful! The book picked up steam until I find myself exhausted at midnight unable to sleep until I finished. Thank you Quinn Coleridge!
I've just had the good fortune of discovering Veritas and binge reading all three. It has some of the most unique world building I've read. The writing is beautiful and the character development is exceptional and deeply poignant. Such a fascinating story arc. The cover art is so, so much better than most of the glop that is out there. I'm grateful I found this fascinating series and hope there are many more books to come !!
Wow! As soon as I started reading Veritas, I immediately was drawn into an amazing world filled with vivid descriptions and a character narrative that I couldn't love more! It was dark, compelling, and intense. I highly recommend this book and can't wait for the next one to release. (Veritas has a closure of the main plot but leaves things open-ended for a larger plot. So you can read it and enjoy it as a stand alone, but I'm betting you'll want more!)
5.0 out of 5 starsExecellant book. Kept me on the edge of my seat, I only wish that my writing is as good!

The main character is loveable, faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles, which she overcomes with help from the people in her life. The story is a rollercoaster ride from start to finish. I will pass this book to many of my friends.
4.0 out of 5 starsA complex and interesting book with some brilliant characters and a unique central protagonist.

Veritas is a mix of sleuth/detective, ghost story, thriller, horror and romance…I’m not entirely sure where I picked up the recommendation for Veritas, but it’s definitely worth a read!
The story starts with Hester; blind, dumb and living in genteel state with her family. But while she’s treated as a helpless ornament by her mother and despised by her father, Hester herself often tests her limits, both on her own and with allies: her companion Cordelia affectionately assists with many tasks, and her beau and partner Tom stays in constant contact. And Hester also has a secret: she has been chosen by the Lady Veritas, and hears Sir Death. Her remaining senses are supernaturally acute, and she can speak to the spirit world.
But the spirit world does not let her live quietly. Murder victims clamour for revenge, and Death presses Hester to find the killer. In addition, Hester is becoming a target – and a prize. A new doctor in town becomes interested in the lively young woman and frustrated at her circumstances, offering to teach her sign language; and Tom’s position as companion and lover grows ever stronger and more precarious as a rival comes on the scene.
Hester’s voice is wonderful; despite her lack of sight and voice, there’s never any lack of description or action, and we see brilliantly through her extended senses. The setting is small-town America with a side dose of an insane alsylum, chillingly portrayed. The characters are excellent; a wide mix of voices and people, all beautifully brought to life by their movements, voices and affections, even though we are unable to see them. Hester’s relationships, both with her loves and her enemies, is nicely done; the motivations of many characters are complex and interwoven, even though Hester is always the central point. The action is very good and the plot tugs along; there are some very good twists and unexpected events throughout, and it’s never boring.
The one thing that lets the book down, and knocks a star off the rating, is that I felt the enemies were confusing. I struggled to work out who was under suspicion at any particular time; while there is one Big Bad, it’s not clear (intentionally, but confusingly) who is an enemy of Hester’s. This is particularly noticeable with the twist at the end; it doesn’t get foreshadowed, and while that makes it very good as a twist, it doesn’t help clear up the confusion! The murder plots also add to the tangles, and while the victims are clear, any potential links between the murderers aren’t. However, it doesn’t detract from the reading of the book; Hester is always a clear voice, even if the workings behind the scenes aren’t entirely clear.
So, overall; a complex and interesting book with some brilliant characters and a unique central protagonist.
