I am in love with this book! 😍😍😍
This is about a girl named Teodora who can turn people into animals or inanimate objects using her magic. She is known to the world as a strega (an Italian witch) but her abilities are known to no one until the day she meets a stranger. Streghe are not looked upon well by the church in this world so a lot of the stregas keep to themselves.
It is only upon the second encounter with this stranger that she realizes that this stranger is also a strega and can shift between being a girl and a boy.
Teodora sees this chance meeting as something she can learn from as she is desperate to learn how to shift into a boy in this Male dominated culture; only boys can be heads of the family. This shift will allow her to take over as head of the family and save her father's life.
This books played with gender a lot and it blurred the lines so much. I loved the way it played with the fluidity of gender and how it blurred the lines to the point the characters were neither Male nor Females, but has properties of both at the same time. There was a romance in this where the lines of gender were so hazy that this became less of a LGBTQ+ romantic relationship and just became simply love.
This books was a fasted paced Italian fantasy and I kept trying to absorb all the details that were put into each chapter. It wasn't overloaded to the point it wasn't easily understandable, it just moved quickly and it felt like the plot never stopped moving forward. Some books have filler chapters and/or scenes that take up space to pass some of the time and I didnt feel this book had any of that. It was a wonderfully cohesive whole that never lost my attention
This book felt so deeply moving and i was really invested in the characters. I would highly recommend this!
