This book is absolutely perfect. Simple and easy-to-read, from beginning to end, this is a book that is worth the read.
A BOOK ON HOW INQUIRY WORKS, FROM BEGINNING TO END
Ernest's book is everything I would have hoped for in a book explaining the concept of Inquiry, how it works, and how to use it to bring peace and joy into my life.
I've been using The Work of Byron Katie to do Inquiry in my life for several years now, always with success when I manage to do it. But Ernest's book brings my capability to a new level.
Unable to afford private coaching in Inquiry, I've been on my own in trying to bring it into my life. This is where this book helps.
Ernest explains, from a concrete, scientific, and evolutionary point of view, exactly what is going on in our minds to bring us pain. And it's all something I'm able to confirm for myself as I read.
Ernest describes things the way they really are. Anyone can relate to this book, because everyone has a mind and all minds work the same.
He explains how, evolutionarily, we are designed to adapt. We create concepts of reality that enable us to move about and act in the world. They give meaning to our world and they tell us how to act. But these concepts of reality bring severe pain when they don't match up with actual reality.
"People shouldn't commit suicide." "I want people to like me." "I need him to be here right now."
A CARING, LOVING WAY TO DEAL WITH STRESSFUL THOUGHTS
Ernest shows how, inexorably and without conscious effort, the pain and stress fall away when you examine your beliefs using the process of Inquiry.
There is no mumbo-jumbo, nothing vague or left out. This book simply and directly shows you exactly how to examine each stressful thought in your life, whether it was 50 years ago or just a moment ago that you felt pain.
Ernest's examples show you step-by-step, using his own worksheets and stressful situations, exactly how to do it. And there's no reason, nothing stopping you from starting now. No step is too hard to understand or do. It is all very simple and direct.
THIS BOOK SUPPORTS YOU IN DOING THE WORK
The supportive, loving, friendly tone of this book make me feel like I have Ernest's exact support all the way through the process.
If you can't afford hundreds of dollars in (excellent) private therapy in The Work, this is the only tool you'll need to feel supported during your efforts to find peace and freedom on your own, doing the Work.
NEW WAYS OF LOOKING AT THINGS
Even if you've reading Loving What Is or Byron Katie's other books, this is a great way to get another perspective into what you already know.
The Inner Simulator, the Map of Reality, and There Is Only Now - these are the concepts that you'll learn about when you delve into this easy-to read book. These are the forces at work in your mind and in your reality during every waking moment of your life, and these are the tools you will use to set yourself free of the pain they cause when they conflict with what really is.
A BETTER EXPLANATION THAN "SHE JUST WOKE UP ONE DAY"
Anyone familiar with the "miraculous" nature of Byron Katie's "awakening" and discovery of the tool called The Work might be frustrated when trying to explain its power to other people.
Now, finally, here's an explanation and a true inner confirmation of why Inquiry works and how to do it that has nothing to do with "Just try it and you'll see that it works (also quite valid)."
A JOY AND A PLEASURE TO READ
The last time I read a book this excellent and easy to understand, it was "Buddhism Made Simple." No other book I've read, until now, comes close to really explaining how and why our minds work they way they do. And this one is everything I hoped for.
This book brings tears to my eyes. It is so beautifully written, so simple, so honest, that it feels wonderful and encouraging to be reading it.
The way Ernest expresses himself is so clear and simple, it's impossible not to enjoy reading. I read his words, I confirm them for myself, and I move on. What a way to learn!
As you read, Ernest never tells you something you don't already know. It's all there, in your mind, waiting to be confirmed by you, by your own thoughts and experiences.
From the font to the formatting and the text-boxes - everything is created perfectly for easy reading and understanding.
HELPFUL EXERCISES AND ILLUSTRATIONS
I was delighted to find short little exercises peppered throughout the book. Not only did they help me breathe better (thank you!) I was able to keep up with the pace of the book and not get overwhelmed or lost.
I also really enjoyed staying involved in the book as I read by doing the exercises. They are very simple and short and none of them requires doing anything other than doing them, so there's no reason to skip them. I love that!
The illustrations and headers make it easy to find your place in the ideas of the book as he walks you through them.
Even though these are simple concepts we can all confirm with our minds, having the little drawings and the easy-to-understand headers spaced throughout the text keeps it light and engaging. And the drawings themselves are simple and delightful.
THE BEST FOUNDATIONAL GUIDE TO DOING INQUIRY SINCE "LOVING WHAT IS"
Simply put, this is the best guide to Inquiry and doing the Work of Byron Katie that I have ever read.
"None of your problems are caused by reality. None of them."
