Another great read by Simpson. Spoiler alert.
This one starts with Gunny Meadows, the POTUS, and his team headed for people who sent a CB distress call last night to Lakota, Oklahoma. Gunny and his men will always try to get there in time. The call came from Corning, Arkansas up near the Missouri border.
All of Gunny's well armed men and women drive older vehicles. No computer chips. Old vehicles that are mechanically perfect. Right now they are hauling a** to get to Corning. Hoping some of the people survived. Hollywood, Scratch, Lars, Griz , Bridget and Stabby are with Gunny. Most of the men, like Gunny, are ex military, know who to shoot and how to kill because there are many gangs and killers still out there. The civilians who ride with him are all well trained and have no problem pulling the trigger. And of course the walking dead are still out there in the millions.
On arrival they find the Jehovah's Witness church mobbed with the dead. It takes a while but they finally get in to find the middle eastern people who had started it all with the tainted meat. The middle eastern killers who had killed millions and were responsible for the walking dead.
Gunny and his men wanted to kill them all but Bridget just couldn't kill the women an kids. Gunny decided to leave. Leave them to their fate. He and the others headed home. One of the men told him that three men led the horde to their door. They were regular people yet walked among the dead and were not attacked. Gunny doesn't know whether to believe the story or not but its worth taking note of.
Jessi with his scarred face has recovered completely. The blue serum that the woman had injected into him had caused him to heal at a fast rate. He's stronger, faster and heals from wounds quicker. The sisters can't figure it out. Jessie still has several of the syringes left and he gave one to Bob his German Shepherd and constant companion and battle buddy. Jessie will be leaving Lakota as an emissary to other settlements. He will be carrying the Lakota gold which will be the new money for the new America. Jessie is keen to get out of Lakota and hit the road. His Merc has been upgraded big time and he's anxious for this new job to start.
General Carson is still trapped in Cheyenne Mountain with a few men. He's already told Gunny that the satellites will be hitting the atmosphere. They can use the data that's sent but they have no way of controlling or guiding the satellites. Gunny will be using that data to locate Casey and his band of cannibals that have killed and raped across the country. The satellites provide key information for Gunny and his team.
Jessie will make it to many towns and meet quite a few good people in the well run settlements. He also makes it to the Tower. A huge monolith that has power and people who don't seem to know what the rest of the country is going through. The CEO of the company isn't interested in trade with other settlements. He thinks his community can survive all on its own. Jessie is wondering what this idiot will do when Casey and his crew attack using RPG's. The building nor the people will survive a determined attack by gangs with those kinds of weapons. The head of security is much smarter. He tells Jessie that they will be trading and Jessie tells him some of the IT folks in the Tower would be more than welcome to help those in Lakota repair and use some of the IT they have and possibly a way to gain control of the satellites they need.
Scarlet is dressed like an Egyptian Goddess. Her Father, she is coming to realize, is bats**t crazy and thinks he's an Egyptian God. He has thousands of followers. He's pretty much taken over Western Canada because Canada had strict gun laws and most civilians were unarmed. Easy pickings for her fathers men. Right now her father wants he to head to the US to check out things there. Scarlett tells him the US won't be easy as most Americans have guns and know how to use them. He of course tells her to head out and report back.
Scarlett is dressed in black leathers and uses batons and machetes to defend herself. She has also been inoculated with the blue serum. She's stronger, faster and has been following Jessie on her motorcycle. So far Jessie hasn't noticed her. Scarlett doesn't quite know what to think of the very capable Jessie.
So begins one damned fine read.
This one has Jessie, Scarlett, Bob, Gunny, Lacy, Griz, the rest of the guys, Bridget, Casey, Lucinda, Warren, a Jessie who had no problem defending himself against Casey's goons, the settlement of Tombstone where Jessie meets Sandy, an older woman who introduce him to sex, a Jessie who is hell on wheels in a fight, a Scarlett who runs into Jessie in Tombston, a Jessie who walks away, a Scarlett who is captured by Casey's goons, a Jessie who saves her, the blue serum which saves them both and Jessie Meadows doing his best to do his job, save who he can, survive and stay alive.
