This book has been wonderful. Truly. Bob Newhart has made a lot of friends over the years, and this audio book is a chance to hear him talking to those friends. His voice shows his age, and that's part of what I love about it.

All of these friends are from a much younger generation, and that is part of what makes it so fun. They clearly admire him, and he clearly admires them. Highlights:
* Exchanging stories about how each got their start
* Talking about the series finale of Newhart...perhaps the best season finale there ever was
* Bob telling so many stories about his good friend, the late Don Rickles

I could go on. I won't. If you are a fan of Bob Newhart, or you know someone who is, or if you just want to learn about what it was like for comedians in the old days, you will love this.

Plot Summary (No spoilers!): Bob interviews, and is interviewed by, the cast listed above. They discuss the history of comedy in general, their personal experiences, and often funny jokes. They also share insights on other comedians and each other during the interviews.

What you liked: It was very interesting to both see Bob Newhart in a different light and listen to him chat with other comedians. They shared many stories about themselves, both shared and independent, and talked about the history and challenges in the comedy industry. It also showed completely different sides of many of the interviewees, particularly Lisa Kudrow, in that their seriousness for the craft and insights were surprising.

What you did not like: I sometimes get frustrated with Newhart’s speaking cadence as it is so slow, but overall, it was a very interesting book.

To be honest, I don't know Bob Newhart. I've never even heard of him. But I have heard of the people he spoke to, and since I was able to get this as part of the audible free reads they offer per month, I decided to give it a go. And I actually enjoyed it more than I thought. It was interesting and a perfect listen to have on while I was at work. It kept me riveted without taking up my entire attention. The voices were distinct enough for me (especially since I know them all) that I knew who was talking, and the cutting between the interviews was seamless. Bob seemed like a sweet guy, and you could hear the admiration everyone has for him. I'm glad I got this, and I think if you're a fan of Newhart, or the others he speaks to, then you should definitely consider giving this audiobook a go.

Bob Newhart is one of preeminent comics in America. With a career that has spanned close to 6 decades, Newhart is as humble as he is famous. Hi Bob! is not so much a book as an audio production. It is a series of conversations with Newhart's friends (a who's who of younger comic geniuses): Judd Apatow, Will Ferrell, Jimmy Kimmel, Lisa Kudrow, Conan O'Brien and Sarah Silverman, interspersed with clips from themselves, Newhart, as well as other comics.

As Newhart and his guests discuss Newhart's career and their own, we get insight into the entertainment industry, where luck is as important a factor as talent. This audio production is engrossing, and at only 3 1/2 hours, it can easily be listened to in one sitting, or a few commutes. Not only are you re-introduced to Bob Newhart's genius, but the easy flow of discussion is well-edited to make you think you are eavesdropping on a group of friends.

If you like Bob Newhart or comedy in general, you'll enjoy this audio book. It is not a book, in the traditional sense, as it's not a reading of a printed release, but is instead some very recently recorded conversations between Bob and Judd Apatow, Conan O'Brien, Lisa Kudrow, Sarah Silverman, and Will Ferrell, each edited together around a theme/subject. Newhart is as sharp as ever and is surprisingly knowledgeable about the careers of the younger performers he's talking with, and their admiration is mutual (one doesn't immediately think Bob and an edgier performer like Sarah Silverman would be simpatico, but they are). Listening to this is like spending time with good friends, or at least with people you wish WERE your friends, and it put a smile on my face. Recommended.
