I didn't know what to expect when I opened the pages of Asian Shorts. This eclectic collection of short stories and personal essays didn't do much for me. I expected the authors to give me some insight into the culture and lifestyle of a part of the world I'm not familiar with. What I found between the covers of the book were recitations of personal experiences that could have happened to my next door neighbor. Mostly, I was disappointed in the lack of depth expressed by these various authors. One or two stories have remained with me...but most were read and passed by.
I recently had the pleasure of being the narrator for this collection of short stories for Audible. As a one time traveler in many parts of Asia myself I found myself smiling at shadows of my own experiences there as they were reflected in the varied narratives. And varied they are. From engineers working in and around opium producing areas to refugees trying to enter America to the recollections of a roving rock music bass player. Underlying each story was the feeling that the people written about here are just like people everywhere underneath the cultural differences, all striving for the same things. Love and security.
