Incredible book! The story of this family and all their ups and downs provides beautiful insight into the fostering journey as well as practical strategies to manage and address some of the challenges that children in the system often face. This book outlines in a clear and easy to follow way, how to put love first even when that feels like the last thing you want to do. The author is open and honest about the challenges that can come with the choice to foster but also the incredible amount of joy that their family has had. This book is a powerful read for anyone on their own fostering journey, those looking to support a family as they go through this process, or anyone who wants to learn how to better support children and families impacted by trauma.
As a foster parent for almost 12 years now, I connected with so many things in this book! I also learned some ideas to try and felt so encouraged reading it! I love that Trish shows she is real and vulnerable and human as well as a trained therapist who has many tools and ideas on parenting children with a lot of trauma. There are lots of tips and insight for anyone considering foster care, foster parents, and especially anyone who may know someone who is a foster parent. I know I always wish I had more support and people who understood or tried to understand what we do and why we do it. It is a calling for many of us. A Call to Love❤️
Amazing book full of helpful, creative and honest insights about the journey of fostering children. Trish does an excellent job of meshing both her personal experiences and knowledge of research on behavior, child development and parenting to discuss the practical parts involved in being a foster/adoptive parent.
We have fostered for over 3 years now and there is not as much support or resources for fostering teens. Trish does a wonderful job at balancing reality with how amazing fostering can be. She shows even professionals are humans who make mistakes so maybe I should give myself a little more grace. The book is an easy read/listen. I listened to the audiobook one chapter a night while doing my nightly laundry. This became a welcome self care ritual that came at a perfect time in my foster care journey. She shared her laughs, her tears, and some practical, attainable tips to be a better foster parent in the unique world of teens. I highly recommend this book for anyone in the foster care world or for anyone who would like some more insight into foster care. These kids are amazing, and worth it, and merely acting on behalf of their trauma. We are called to love them as they walk their path.
