5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing

SO. I have been rather into Reverse Harem books lately. Uh uh... Stop right there, and get your mind out of the gutter (I know what you're thinking) Tut tut, shame on you.

As one reviewer so eloquently put it ( I don't remember who, I just remember reading it in a review somewhere) Harems are not all about the sex *insert slightly altered version of "All About That Base here* but more to do with the main character's relationship with her boys. For instance, some of my all time favorite Reverse Harem books are so PG (some of them venture into the PG-13 Category, but oh well. For instance, I love Ouran High School Host Club, and Pretear, Classi 9... Yes, I know they're all Manga, but still. Reverse Harem. Cute. Not smutty. Also, you have the Academy by C.L. Stone,
which is super swoony and not smutty.

But I'm getting off topic.

I read Academy of Assassins, and oh my holy hot caaaaakes, it was magnificent. MAG. NI. FI. CIENT. I literally read it in one sitting, it was that good. And apparently I did not pay enough attention to the release date when I purchased the Kindle book, because I thought that there was more than one book already out. But no. Nope. Of course not. SO NOW I HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL SOMETIME NEXT YEAR BEFORE THE SECOND BOOK COMES OUT.

I am not okay.

Okay

Well, I mean, yes I am. But I am also very emotionally distraught as well. it was so good, and I haven't had a book that I've been so obsessed with in a while. I loved it so much that not only do I own the Kindle version, but I also went and ordered the actual paper back, because I like to underline my favorite parts in pencil, and leave little sticky notes inside, so when my friend inevitably reads the book, she'll get to see it all.

The cover is abso-freaking-lutely gorgeous. It really matched with how I pictured Morgan in my head.

I loved Morgan, and how she was so independent and kick a$$. She wasn't a damsel in distress, and she did not need saving, thankyouverymuch.

I loved that she could hold her own with the boys, and didn't let anyone push her around. She also stood up for people when she saw that they were being treated poorly. She sometimes was a bit too independent and that caused her more trouble than it was worth, (if she would have just communicated better to people... but she'd been through a lot, and some people didn't want to be very communicative, so I understand)

I loved her relationship with the boys, yes even Kincade, even though he was pretty much a douche bag the whole way through.

I'm not sure who my favorite guy is.. I really like Ascher, and Draven, and Ryder, and I'm still on the fence about how I feel about Kincade and Atlas.

I totally called the Hellhound being an actual person, I just had no idea how important he'd actually end up being to Morgan.

There was so much going on so many twists and turns, and I love the fact that Morgan could take care of herself (which I have mentioned before) She was kicking a$$ and taking names, and she was also very tough emotionally as well. She went through so much growing up, but she didn't let it break her, instead she used that pain to make herself stronger.

So here I sit.

Waiting

I need the next one now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Book 1 Is Fun, The Rest is a Mess

Don't be fooled by the great reviews of book 1. It is certainly a fun and interesting book. It leaves you in suspense, wondering what's going to happen next. However, the rest of the books become more and more incoherent and the storyline is a debacle at best.

Now, I know I'm supposed to be reviewing just book one, but like most Adult Romances nowadays, everything is a series and you have to buy 3-5 pieces of the puzzle. This first book made me very much enjoy the main character. She is a badass, stands up for herself, and gives into lusty thoughts of the other badass assassins she works with. She has a mystery power that is dark and seems a bit evil. She is somehow tied to certain demons and it makes it hard for others to trust her. There's a palpable tension between her and the leader that kept me sparked throughout the first book. I'm giving the first book a 4 since it does have some grammatical and spelling errors that are hard to overlook. I'll give the series a 2 for the trainwreck of a plot.

Spoiler Alert for anyone who actually wants to finish the series: There's little to no romance. Like almost none. She has these occasional makeout sessions, but they're short and not exactly what you'd expect from a Reverse Harem series. Overall I was just let down by the series. I finished because I wanted to know where it all led, but I couldn't even follow the plot after the third book. I mean spaghetti plot city.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too many inconsistancies

I quit the reading 10% into the 3rd book. She is so strong in the first book, but then slowly becomes a twit. She is a fast healer, but then not. She only has a fraction of her power, but when the thing that is supposed to be dampening her power no longer works she is less powerful than before? She opens a portal and sends all of the bad guys through, but the next book seems to forget that and claims she hasn't done anything powerful enough. She hunted by herself for so long, but now can't seem to go two feet without being a screw up. She saves one of her mates with her blood, but when her next mate is dying, a moron has to cut her hand and make her do the same thing, because she is too stupid to remember. They can read her mind with the mating runes and know how deep and feels for them, but they need to earn her trust cuz they don't already know how she feels.... And that is just a fraction of the stupid. Oh and the entire first chapter is messed up in the 3rd book. It switches between 2 fonts and repeats itself, and when u go to switch pages they don't make sense. And did I mention grammar errors in the second book omg... drove me crazy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, fast paced, strong heroine and a slew of leading men...

I’ve just re-read this thinking I’d bought book two. Unfortunately I hadn’t - Academy of Magic, Academy of Assassins - names and covers too similar for my old brain to notice. So I now have to buy book 1 of Academy of Magic, and wait, impatiently, for book 2 of Academy of Assassins! Ah well…

This is good, just as good on a second reading. It starts fast, grabs the interest, and never lets go. There’s a degree of insta-lust, but apart from some yearning and a few kisses, nothing much happens on that side of things, as Ms Brutger allows the action of the story to take precedence.

Morgan is a strong lead, and the men around her are a good match. There’s fighting aplenty, skullduggery, bitchiness, some mystery, a lot of trust building, and hardly any downtime to allow souls to catch up and bodies to heal. No girlie chats, not much laughter, not even an occasional lie-in!

MINOR SPOILERS

This looks to be a reverse harem storyline - 1 lass and a passel of strong, doughty, gorgeous, but vulnerable, men who seem destined to be hers and hers alone (I don’t think I’m giving much away here). Our heroine is blessed / cursed with ever-developing powers and abilities, including the ability to recover from what would be mortal wounds to a mere mortal - well it wouldn’t be much of a story line if she was just an ordinary lass would it? The book is from her view point, so it’s not until the bonus chapter at the end, written from one of the men’s perspective, that we get an indication of what Morgan looks like.

I’m looking forward to book 2, and will buy my books with a touch more care in future!

3.0 out of 5 stars A good story line

I enjoyed the story line, the characters complemented the plot well. There was a glancing familiarity with Hogworts and the writing a bit clumsy in places. However I will read the next in the series as I was drawn into the development of the plot, and it was an enjoyable couple of hours escapism!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enthralling, entertaining, gripping..

I'm unsure as to how anyone could give this book less than the full five stars. This book had me so hooked that even though I was supposed to be getting some sleep prior to working a night shift, I could hardly tear myself away from the pages. This is my first book by this author but it won't be my last. I love the way that Kindle Unlimited throws up some serious gems when you least expect it and this one was it. While the school with its shifting layout had a passing similarity to Hogwarts the characterisation and story were wholly original. I found this story utterly enthralling. My only complaint is that now I have to wait for the next book in the series, so in the meantime I will be re-reading this one.

I found it a really interesting and enjoyable read. I love the world and wish we had seen more of the witches and how they interacted with Morgan before she left for the Academy. I like how her relationships develop and the twist at the end.

I also really love that Morgan is the best, she doesn't get shown up by the guys. She is equal if not superior to them in terms of skills and it shows. It's empowering to read. I definitely kicked extra butt after reading this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read.

I did not want to put this book down, in fact went straight on to read book 2 before leaving this review.

Very well written with characters I enjoyed reading about be they good or bad. Morgan is a total bad-ass heroine who is out to prove her worth in a world where all she wants to be is to be accepted as a hunter, but she is female. I want to visit this academy.

First time having read one of this authors books and I will be reading more.
