David Friedman’s latest book, Culture by Design, is a gem. David and his team at High Performing Culture have done a brilliant job in outlining a practical system for impacting Culture. Research confirms that one of the most important elements of organizational success is Culture. Having an exceptional culture provides competitive advantage and true differentiation. And while the concepts of shaping culture, as David suggests, are easy, developing a high-performing culture takes discipline, consistency and a relentless commitment by senior leaders to stay the course. Culture by Design is a how-to guide to develop a high performing culture. It is a practical and easy guide for those leaders who truly want to build outstanding teams. As the head coach of a US Footwear company, I have had the good fortune to see David in person. Absent of getting to see David live, this book follows his presentation 95% of the way through. Many speakers tell why you need to pay attention to your business culture but few give you the tools to affectively change it. Dave’ s personal experience and systemic method is the best, most practical way to I have seen. I bought this book for all of my Management committee members prior to seeing his presentation. They all agree it is pretty much right on target. We are about to implement David’s system.
This is one of the clearest most straightforward DIY books on a subject that has been close to me for decades; organizational culture. Most DIY books fall short of their stated objectives and never quite provide the promised roadmap for implementing the shared principles behind the topic. David Friedman, in Culture by Design introduces a time tested system he developed in an earlier company. The success of the system is rooted in sound anthropological notions of behaviors linked to culture. He also successfully acknowledges then addresses how to overcome our human tendency to not see through the initiatives we as leaders have the best of intentions of completing. Rituals, it turns out, are the crucial component of completing the habit loop that ultimately establishes a new behavior as an habitual behavior. This easy reading book has the capacity to provide organizations with a roadmap for implementing a culture that will pay dividends for years to come. Check it out!
As a consultant, I have worked with Culture for a long time. when I first saw David's material I was skeptical. The simplicity of his Fundamentals Process just seemed too easy. I have since become a committed believer and we use the process within our own organization. Culture by Design is a clean, clear, succinct how-to template for transforming the culture of any organization. Simplicity does not mean easy, but building high performance into the fabric of day to day operations in a company never was. Any thoughtful leader could take this book and apply it's process to their organization. Thanks David for this gift to all who dare! Craig L. Clark, CEO/Founder Momentum Consulting
The investor letters that are published every year for many corporations outline their Vision, Mission, Goals, and sometimes Values. If the leaders are smart they share these statements with their staff and employees. The one element that I rarely see is how strong the culture is imbedded in the organization. “Culture by Design” is a perfect roadmap to install a strong culture.

I run a 50 person OEM and was dealing with multiple desired cultures (family and corporate). HPC was a great solution as it is behavior based. Desired, tangible behaviors are much easier for us to deal with vs. interpetations of values and cultures. Culture By Design is an effective, practical book on a subject that many books / organizations make way more complicated than needed.
