5.0 out of 5 starsI'm madly in love with this series
Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2018
So, disclaimer, I'm madly in love with this series. This was even better than book one! The funny thing is, there's a lot going on that I don't usually like; the continuously shifting and expanding POV, for example. But the author does it in a way that's seamless and natural and feels right for this series. There's also repetition in the plot on a grand scale (every time things start to settle down or heat up (romantically), something bad happens to throw our heroes back into the fray). But the story and characters are so fun and interesting that it never bothers me. And I don't mind the abundance of 'travel' and all the hangups the crew faces along the way, either. I don't know why-- but I don't! Perhaps the biggest 'cliche' this series gets right where so many others fail hard, is the ever-popular love triangle. Without saying too much, I'll just let it be known that I bow down to Sara C Roethle's ability to turn my affections for characters over and over so effortlessly. I really don't know how she does it, but the women does it well! Be still my heart with her cliffhangers, too. If you couldn't tell already, I'm her newest fangirl. =P
2.0 out of 5 starsAnnoying immature writing style, compelling storyline
Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2019
I’ve been dragging myself through by sheer persistence.
It is difficult to put my finger on exactly why I find her style so irritating. I guess it just feels like the author is drawing out the journey to pad the length of the book without adding any meaningful story elements. I generally enjoy world building and character development but in this tale I’m really struggling to connect with the characters. Her descriptions of places and things is generally adequate. It’s really just character development and dialogue, particularly their inner dialogues that I have a problem with. A shame considering the story itself is quite entertaining. With better writing this could have been the next Harry Potter. As it is, I can’t make it to the end of this book.
I thought this series was the best I have read in years. Even better than Terry Brooks and that is saying a lot. I read fantasy all the time. Could not put these books down and I am in my 60s. I had all five read within a few days. I hope the author keeps this series going for a really long time. Love it. Only downside, I have to wait for the next one. She is one talented author.
I'm having a hard time, with this author writing style. There's to much detail. I'm force to skip/skim a lot boring detail. Plus I find, there's nothing preventing me from putting the book down. I normally spend hours reading my books. With book 2 of this series, I find it hard to read 20 minutes. Before I'm force to put the book down. I hope the series pick up. Because the story is flat and boring (it lacks something).
I also don't like it when the author has there heroine with amnesia. I find it a cheap ploy on the author. To have everyone know the heroine, and not tell her. And use the amnesia against her.
I hope starting with book 3. The author continue the series, in a way it's no longer boring and flat.
5.0 out of 5 starsAmazing continuation of the story...can't wait for book 3!
Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2017
Amazing continuation of the first book! I think I liked it even better than book 1. This book grows leaps and bounds in character development, plot twists, and uncertain loyalties. The story becomes a lot more intense and exciting and what you think you know or expect from the characters is totally ripped away. I read this book and the first one a few months ago, so I was incredibly disappointed to not be able to finish the story. I am looking forward to picking up the third book in a few days.
3.0 out of 5 starsDo not purchase for audible - TERRIBLE NARRATION
Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2018
Good story but THE WORST narrator of any audiobook I have ever experienced. She rushes through the book and her inflection/cadence are that of a news reporter with a very obvious midwestern accent. Terrible character voice acting with inconsistent accents. I thought the narrator of the first book was just plain boring, but this one is painful to my ears. I have had to rewind several times, as I often zone out even in the midst of an action scene. Not sure if I can finish this in audio format. Wondering how this passed production at all. Biggest waste of $7 for audio yet.
5.0 out of 5 starsThe "Tree of Ages" series is worth the read!
Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2018
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. So far I have read The Tree of Ages; The Melted Sea; and The Blood Forest. All excellent. Ms. Roethle has a unique ability of providing the reader with awesome imagery. Her detail to the events that you are reading about and the surrounding scenery as the characters move forward on their journey is very detailed and easy to visualize. I highly recommend those who love to read fantasy with magic should definitely read this series.
There was no tree changing to human this book but a human turning into a tree. I like Ms. Roethle's books but I'm going to take a break for a few books. There's love blooming in this book and a helping of jealousy. There's mistrust, anger, hate and resentment. What else could you ask for. I did not like the ending of this book but I guess someone has to die. I will return but first a love story of two.
5.0 out of 5 starsEnchanting and addictive read....
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 10, 2020
I have absolutely loved this series. It doesn't just tell a story but tells each character's individual journey as well, so you get to know each of them in depth. I have found them very addictive to read and can't wait for the next...
A really good read! Lots of chores were put off and sleep was lost because it was so gripping. The only downside was the discovery that the next book in the series doesn't have audio narration, so I've not bought it yet. -- Waiting to see if they'll do the audio eventually.
