As a retired Navy Supply Corps Officer, I can completely place myself in the context of this book. Robert Knauer absolutely nails the Navy mentality and culture in the 80's with regard to outrageous, larger than life characters (many of them cruel, insensitive leaders who pass along the "this is the way I was treated as a junior officer mentality (so I am simply passing it along/giving it back)," the strains of prolonged deployments and separation from family, and the lengths sailors and officers go to simply to maintain their sanity in the monotony of the day-to-day grind. No day is ever the same, but the pace on deployment is simply ruthless. A "must read" for any "chop", "black" or "brown shoe", or anyone else who simply enjoys a good yarn of Navy life told from a first-hand perspective. The books moves rather quickly through LT Bob Cantley's early career, but as time slows down on his final tour (ship; the USNS SAN CLEMENTE), the story line ramps up to draw you in to power through the twisted conclusion. You cannot see the plot twist coming nor how the story ends. Loved it!
Atrociously written, poorly edited, horrible depiction of the Navy in which I proudly served. I met many fine officers and enlisted men and women who represented their country with pride and dignity. As someone who is familiar with life on a supply ship, and in particular the one the author served on, this does no justice to the hard working, decent men and women who support the fleet. It says something about the author, that the only decent person in the story is the one modeled after himself. Don't waste your money on this awful story!
An entertaining yarn that will resonate with anyone who served in the Pacific fleet in the 1980s or 1990s. Robert Knauer perfectly captures the day-to-day routine, attitudes, and behaviors of life at sea during that era, particularly for officers in the Supply Corps.
Robert Knauer very successfully authors a gripping story generating many thoughts and memories of my military days. A great read with a twist . . . Just the way I like them. I couldn't put it down, nor will you. A must read!
Wow! This novel provides a truly gutteral experience for what it's like to walk and live in the shoes of a U.S. Navy Supply Corps Officer. I highly recommend for those considering joining the ranks and becoming a Pork Chop. Hooyah!
