The story was going along well. A fair amount of, "Oh, I know! - or at least think I know - but I'm not going to tell you quite yet," which I find more annoying than suspense building, but still an engaging story. I was really enjoying the magician angle. Then, just as the story was approaching the final deneument, it became stupid.
Potential Spoiler Alert!
When the killer has seen pictures of your spouse, when the killer knows said spouse is working with the police, you don't let said spouse check out a lead for you while you stay home with the kids. If you are that spouse, you don't go. You ask for police protection instead. Also, if you can't shoot the bad guy who has tied himself to the victim because you might hit the victim, you probably aren't competent to shoot the rope that binds them without hitting the victim.
What was a decent 3 - 3.5 star story plummeted to a generous 2 stars with the TSTL detective and spouse and the detective's magically (ha ha!) changing shooting skills. Really a shame. It had such promise. I felt a bit cheated.
