4.0 out of 5 stars History of Russia

You want to visit Russia and prepare for the challenge, this is a great book to help you get there. It gives you all the basics that you need. It's a short overview of the history of Russia starting with the 9th century until the present day. It is a definite must introductory reading to better understanding of its people and culture. Don't be a stranger when in Russia.

This is a nation that went through a lot of rough and dramatic changes throughout the history that shaped its people. Maybe we don't understand why they do things the way they do them, but this book can clarify it.

I found this book quite helpful and would recommend it to anyone. It definitely helps you understand Russia better and why they are the way they are.

I usually hesitate to write a bad review, but this "book" was so awful, I have to say something. It reads like a hastily researched junior high school composition. It has many typos and grammatical errors, and consists of one tired cliche after another. The childish writing style leaves me with doubts about the accuracy of the content. The fact that this author has published a number of other "books", including one on numerology which promises to reveal the reader's future, reinforces my impression: he spends very little time on his products, and there is no point in wasting yours reading them.

2.0 out of 5 stars A big disappointment

I expected this to be the “Cliff Notes” of Russian history. It indeed tries to do that but suffers from poor editing and a lack of scholarly language. It covers all the main events so its average in meeting my expectations. But the poor editing, word choices and grammatical errors makes it confusing and unsatisfactory. It’s short length is a major contributor to those shortcomings

One of the worst books I've ever read. It reads like the first draft of a thesis, with many spelling and grammatical errors. For such a short book, I had to re-read several sentences to try and understand what the author was hoping to say. I'm not sure why it says "Best Seller" on the front...this is quite misleading. I'm very upset that I paid what I did for this book. The description and positive reviews made me excited to order, but I could not have been more disappointed by page one.

1.0 out of 5 stars A very poorly written book.

This was a very disappointing book. It is written in English but has many problems like sentence fragments, improper verb tense, etc. It is written much like a simplistic textbook for maybe the 8th grade. It even has quiz questions at the end of each chapter. There must be many better choices for a history of Russia.

A rather basic overview. I expected more for $17.00. There are much better books on the market that provide much more detail. But again, if one is looking for a basic overview, this will work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading!

In the introduction, it says “Hundreds of books have been written about Russian history, so this may look like an exercise in redundancy. However, it is not. This aims at being a chronological synopsis that can be helpful to everybody, from pupils to aspiring historians.”
The book has achieved this, in that it is a chronological synopsis. My only concern is that in making it so the author has chosen not to include many interesting events in Russian history. Some examples are the execution of Tsar Nicholas II and his family, Yuri Gagarin going to space, or the Duma. Similarly, there is no mention of important people like Leon Trotsky. There is also nothing much on the rich cultural history of Russia.
There are also a few errors in the book.
Despite all this, it felt like a good refresher course on Russian history.

This book was a refreshing look at Russian history in terms of how resilient the country and it's people were to the ups and downs encountered (internally) and and how it played a key role in WWI to save the world from Germany's Hitler. The book spans a period from 800 AD up until the Syrian crisis (2015) through to today (that put US and Russia head on). From imperialism, to revolt, to communism and then final to break-up and to the present time of the Russian Federation.

This is a basic introduction to Russian history and as such does its job.
However as with so many "new" Russian history books there are too many attempts to rehabilitate Stalin (bad, but good). Also the treatment of Putin is disingenuous.
