This is the first book I have read by this author and I have to say she is now on my must read list. This book was great, loaded with action, secrets and a little hint of a potential romance. But the storyline is unique....I don't want to give to much away but there are witches, demons, vampires and danger. Can't wait for the next one! Well done!
This is the first time i have read a book by this author and let me say im glad this was the first book! i love the storyline theres ups and down, suspense, action, romance kindling between dorian and zoe, drama, in my opinion everything urban fantasy should be. i cant wait to get the second book! i try books out on my kindle and if it does everything i look for in a really good book i buy the paperback version and it gets added to my library and this book made the cut! i couldn't put it down!
Same old same old. Looks to eventually be a romance. Girl falls for big strong guy, is in fact attracted to him the moment she lays eyes on him. It does have an interesting magic system, and it's not full of typos. Yay. It got higher ratings for that, and I read it all in one go, so it got 4 stars.
I tried to like this, as it sounded right up my alley, but I couldn't even finish it. My main issue is that people (especially the main character) were idiots just to advance the story. Like when they went to the vampire bar and the unmarked witch was allowed to go with them. Obviously this was because the author needed her there to help propelled the plot, but it made zero sense for them to let her go. And then she downed a strange drink made by strange vampires (seriously, every woman knows not to trust strange drinks, and that's even without vampires involved!), and got herself taken as a vampire meal with neither of the main characters noticing. Seriously? WT*? And then the main character had the nerve to whine and protest about it, despite knowing it was all legal, and she is the one who got them all into the entirely avoidable situation. It was annoying and tiresome, and there were several other incidents where she acted idiotically.
And the main character has horrid "witty" repartee and is an unrepentant criminal who wants to go back to her criminal ways and blames being a criminal on the fact no one helped her out in life. There are plenty of us who have made it on our own without resorting to committing crimes. She sounds like a whiner with a victim complex.
The final straw was when a plot "twist" (the clues were telegraphed a mile away, but I was trying to give the author the benefit of the doubt and was hoping it was something else related instead of exactly what it was) was only possible because the narrator lied to us, despitethe storyt being in her words and thoughts. The author tried to get away with it by having the protagonist say something like "it was my deepest secret that I didn't admit even to myself" but come on. That is such a weak cop out.
I'm sad, because there were some potentially interesting ideas here, but the execution was not good. Perhaps, as other reviewers said, it could work as a "beach read" if you can shut your brain off and go with the flow, but I couldn't. (Maybe in part because I disliked the main character so much. So if you like her it might be an easier read to get through.)
