5+ stars! Beautiful read, just beautiful.

Alex comes from a well to do family; money, privilege, society...and expectations. Alex is an artist, a free spirit, determined to not live the predetermined life her parents have planned out for her. West is a struggling college golfer trying to make ends meet while bearing the brunt of his family's finances. His daddy left and his sister has many medical problems, and therefore, many medical bills. Alex and West meet at the golf course and their attraction is instant. West fights it once he finds out who Alex is, who her family is, determined he's not worthy of her, not what she deserves. Struggling with money, West enlists for the army. Alex gets accepted to an art school in NYC. With only a few months remaining together they make the most of the time they have left.

6 years passes. Although she wrote to him often, Alex never heard from West again. Is he alive? Has he moved on? She discovers, shockingly, not only is he alive, he lives in the same town where she lives and runs her gallery. When she seeks him out, she finds he has changed, in more ways than one and is given the cold shoulder. Can she prove to West once and for all, he's everything she's ever wanted, everything she deserves...as is.

This story is beautiful from start to finish. The writing is just exquisite. It makes you feel, makes you hopeful, makes you proud. This is the second book in the Over series, and although I knew I liked Alex is book 1, I love her in this story. She's got such a pure and good heart, with drive and determination. West is a fixer, a selfless man who would shoulder the world for the people he loves. You also get a dose of all the other great characters from Hope Over Fear, giving you the humor and camaraderie that made that book so great. I enjoyed this one very much, highly recommend.

Alex Fontaine was introduced in Hope Over Fear as Sara's close friend. She's an artist with her own gallery and she grew up in a wealthy and privileged lifestyle. It's obvious from the previous book that there is someone in Alex's life that she had a connection with and is still looking for, without success. In the meantime, all of her dates are epic failures and Alex is unable to move forward.

The guy happens to be West Adler, someone Alex met during her high school years and he works on the golf course, employed by Alex's dad. I really liked West right away, I could see how much he cared about Alex but tried to keep her at arm's length for both of their sakes. It became apparent that they wouldn't be able to ignore their chemistry for much longer, yet they both had separate paths for the future.

Alex finally tracks West down, and with a million scenarios playing out in her head, she definitely did not anticipate the reaction she got from him when they meet again. West is a completely different person, hardened and cold with very little warmth in his reception towards Alex, basically telling her to go away. I decided that maybe I had judged too soon in liking West because no matter what he was thinking on the inside, there's just no way he could justify such callous and insensitive behavior towards an old girlfriend whom he never wanted to be apart from.

Fortunately, West's POV is also shared in this book and delves into his thoughts. West is suffering a lot on the inside for so many reasons. Alex, deciding to take her chances, attempts to break through his exterior with little success. I applaud Alex for trying because I would've warned her away. Yet she persisted and wasn't easily deterred. But just like with Sara in the previous book, West cannot be helped until he helps himself first. Only then can he heal and be the type of person he wants to be to offer what Alex deserves.

There's a lot of harshness emanating from West and I did understand his need to push Alex away. He thought he was protecting her by hurting her. I do like the awareness this book brings to characters like West, the sort of person who selflessly gives up everything for the greater good of their country and the support they should receive when they come home. The story is well-written and packed with emotion.

Wow! The books in this series keep getting better! As you can see on the cover this is a story about unfinished love. High school lovers that were separated and you are left to wonder if they will make it back to each other. I don’t want to give anything away in this review because I hate that but I will say that in the end you will be happy.
The books in this series can be read as standalones as well. It was nice to hear from all the other characters from book one. You meet Alexandra from book one and she was a little mysterious with what was going on in her life. You get to be in her head this whole book and hear about her heartbreaking but beautiful story. This is a second chance love story at its best. J.A.’s writing is beautiful. The way she writes her characters is almost real life.
I highly recommend this book. If you are a fan of second chance romance this one is for you. If you want to read about flawed characters that are so lovable you want to jump into the pages, this one is for you. I can’t wait to continue to read this series. The covers are just gorgeous and the writing just sucks you right in. 4.5 stunning stars.

A line from this story is "You were worth every second of the wait" My response is "This book is worth every second to read".

J. A. DeRouen weaves words into scenes that fill the mind's eye, characters with such depth they become real, conversations that are heard more than read, emotions that live on long after the last page is turned.

The story of Alexandra (Alex) and West is full of layers. From their first meeting as high schoolers til their paths cross again six years later. From differences involving a life of wealth and a life of financial struggles to a life of emotional despair and a life fighting to survive. From a love that blossoms in youth to a love that refuses to die.

Everything in Wings Over Poppies is very real - as real as the tears, the laughter, the sighs it pulled from me as it took ownership over a piece of my heart. This is too beautiful to read once and put away. I will visit Alex and West again ... and again.

I absolutely adore this author and her previous book Hope Over Fear. So I was waiting the publication of Wings Over Poppies with eager anticipation. I was not disappointed either! In fact I couldn't put this book down. And now I can't wait for the next book. This book follows Sara's best friend Alex who we met in HOF. This is a wonderful love story about Alexandra and West whom we first get I introduced to in the first few chapters and then after a painful 6 year separation, they find each again. This is a wonderful story about love, hope, forgiveness with a great supporting cast of characters. It is better if you read Hope Over Fear first but it's not necessary. Great story with no cliffhangers and a HEA. Would highly recommend!!!!

I enjoyed this book, maybe not quite as much as the first one in the series. Something I did notice was a number of word mistakes, as if it had been spell checked but not actually proof read by a person. That gave way to an amateur feel, unfortunately for this author.

This story is just magical. Alex is such a sweet girl and her lovely personality shine through despite the obstacles in her path. 'Tell me something I don't know' was the catchphrase for Alex & West and just sums up their relationship beautifully. I was so happy to see them finally get together (sorry for the spoiler but I love a happy ending). I loved this book.
