Let me start off by saying that the cover art for this book is such a deterrent! Very hokey ... and I am sure it scared away potential customers. Please don't let the horrible book cover deter you from buying this book. It's a great read, I really enjoyed it. There are so many elements of fantasy and magic thrown in this book ... that I was hard put to figure out the ending of a scene before it happened. Yeah... of course we all know the good guy comes out on top... but getting there was a roller coaster! Every chapter..paragraph... is movement ... running from one world, neighborhood, house to another. Nothing in this book was a sit down read of 3-4 boring pages ... oh no... you are thrown around like a whirligig. It's a good thing...and also a bad thing. Our protag is constantly moving from one dangerous dilemma to another without really catching his breath. I must admit .. at one point I was just wandering when we could find out more about this guy without him running into trouble .. his life before all the madness. Other than that, I thought the book was well written... it kept me engaged ... and it had few errors.
I would definitely recommend this book to people interested in fantasy and wizards.
Note: Just read the other reviews and wanted to comment. It is true, that the characters use the word "ya" a lot .. and everytime the word popped up, I kind of felt like I was in a scene from Fargo. I think the author was going for "Yeah." Hey, it's San Fran... so I'm pretty safe with this conclusion. And sex? Yes, it's here, but it's by no means anywhere near pornographic. I've read books that make this one look like "Clifford the Big Red Dog" as far as sex scenes go. I thought they were tame... if a little descriptive.
