This book is unexpected and awesome.
I am actually very interested in the Viking period and I know a lot more about it than any sane person who isn't an historian does. With that said, I was not at all irritated by this book's portrayal of the Viking period. It wasn't perfect, but neither is my knowledge of the era. What matters to me is that someone did enough research as to make sure that I didn't feel like they were just making everything up. Woo hoo!
Also, I F'n love the main female. Love love lovity love. I love that she, and half the book, are not white, but also not stereotypes. I love that this book didn't rely on tired tropes. I love that this lead chick was super into making stuff (I would be just as excited about working a giant Viking standing loom or learning how to make a knife.).
This book rocks.
