I did like the different authors and their unique ways of telling their stories. Though it seemed as though everything was sweet and always worked out, I would like to have seen more of their trials adapting to the new life or to each other.
I love the whole premise of mail order brides and wondered how these authors would approach writing stories about it. Let me say that none of them disappointed me. I didn't want to put it down and each story for me is definitely worthy of 5 stars!
If you haven't had a chance to read any of these anthologies I would suggest you pick your favorite sounding collection. The Road Trip collection, this one, California Dreaming, Winter collection, Love Letters collection, etc., and dive right in. I have read several and have really enjoyed all of them. I really enjoy them for the fact that I don't have to question/wonder if they will be clean. I don't have to spend my time reading reviews wondering if I will have to close the book part way through or if I will be able to finish it. All of these timeless romance anthologies have great novellas that are sweet and romantic and lots of fun. I love that I can(I'm sure you've read this in other reviews but it's true) sit and read through the whole thing or have a story I can read in a short amount of time as I read one novella then another.
I love the idea of Mail Order Brides and have read several other books that have been based off of that idea. Marriages of Convenience usually end up being great reads and this group of authors were able to pull of 6 great reads in my opinion. It's been a couple weeks of vacation time, and several books during that time, since I read this and so I won't break it down into individual stories but I will say that they all had their own unique spin off. I found myself wondering how each author would approach this topic.
The stories range from a wealthy heiress looking for somebody to love her and not her money to a doctor wanting a wife who has midwifery training to an Italian immigrant leaving her family to find love of her own to an orphan searching for safety and stability in marriage, and a couple other spin offs. I enjoyed them and am always looking forward to the next collection in these anthologies.
This was a very good collection of mail order bride novellas. I enjoyed each and every novella in the collection. All of the authors did a great job of writing stories that allowed me to connect with the characters in a short amount of time. The only thing I felt was missing was that when each novella ended, I wished that there was an epilogue to each story, allowing me to look six months to a year into the future with each of these couples. I would have really enjoyed seeing what was going on in their lives and it would have made the endings more fulfilling for me.
I listened to the audio version and the narration was well done for each story.
Since there were several short stories in this set, I enjoyed some more than others. 1: Georgie and Clay- nostalgic and light. A bit too predictable for me to truly buy in. The surprise was lost because I knew both sides of the story. 2: MIdwife Bride- strong development of the emotions for both characters. Some suspense and action. One of my top 3 choices. 3: The Sound of Home: Marilyn and Thomas. A sweet love story dealing with marrying family- some plot twists. deals with family and special needs. The way Marilyn treated Harry endeared her to me and to Thomas. 4: Gerald & Mary: one of my top 3 choices. Mary's story of brokenness and healing is endearing to me. The author brings Gerald full circle with an honesty and vulnerability and makes you want to cheer for this couple. 5: Carmela and Samuel. I suppose there are many reasons for a mail order bride. This one was unique because she really didn't NEED to be a mail order bride like the others who were orphans or destitute or running from pain/abuse. I think there wasn't enough conflict in this story to make me buy into this love story. 6: Caleb & Katie: Although a mail order bride, this story was unique because there was time for them to cultivate feelings for each other. Most mail order bride stories have a quick marriage and then they fall in love, but this one was mostly in reverse so it didn't hold the same feel as a mail order story to me.
This was a nice mix of clean romance stories. Some were more my taste than others, but it has something for everyone. I only skipped one, and that was because it felt like the groom was pushing a physical relationship kind of quick.
A mail order bride collection is going to have a certain amount of predictability, but it was interesting to see how each writer took the concept and made it their own. Sarah Eden's twist of the couple actually knowing each other from the past was unique (at least to me). I think the whole idea of mail order brides is fascinating. You can approach it from the perspective of a woman desperate to find her own place in the world and not be battered about by fate, or a woman trying to escape a worse fate and choosing marriage to a stranger as a better alternative. Or even a woman looking for adventure. It's also funny to me that some young women were seen as too pretty to be mail order brides, as though "pretty enough" women would have plenty of options for marriage without having to resort to such a recourse.
I know some readers scoff at these types of romances as the super attractive girl and the astoundingly handsome man meeting one another, but they forget how subjective attraction really is. All that really matters is that the other half of the partnership finds the person appealing. It's not like the whole town falls all over themselves at the sight of her or him.
Romantic and delightful stories ! I enjoyed the western settings and the interesting plots. Would recommend it to those who enjoy a romantic story, without explicit sexual scenes.
