“You can plunge to the depths, forever swallowed by the darkness of depression. Or, you can climb out inch by agonizing inch and survive…and even thrive.“ Anyone who has battled with depression knows that it is a hard road to trod. The struggle is real and it does not just go away like that. Patrice M Foster, through her memoir, shows us that it can be don’t though. You can take that journey and find yourself.

I think everyone should read this book; both those who are going through depression and those who are not. It gives great insight on the matter and knowledge and understanding on this topic is key to helping both ourselves and those around us. This was really inspiring. I appreciate her candor and openness. She went through so much. Reading her experience really broke my heart. But it helped me to be more appreciative of what I have and try not to complain too much.

The only reason I did not give it a five star review is because of editing issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars What I especially loved about this book was the character development

Wow, what a journey this book truly was. I’ve read a lot of books but I rarely read such novel as raw, honest, and wholeheartedly written as this. The main character is such a brave woman to tell the world about her story and her struggles in the past. For me, it’s the toughest thing to do. The book totally got me on a different level and that’s because of the way the story was told. The writing was so passionate, one that absolutely drew me in and made me turn into an emotional mess.

What I especially loved about this book was the character development. I loved how determined she was in getting over the horrible things that happened to her. At times I found myself unable to resist crying because there were scenes that were moving and too emotional. I was surprised by the intensity of this book and how it won me over. My huge respect to the author for bringing up this story that may hit home to some but will absolutely inspire everyone to survive even the most terrible depression.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bold and Inspirational Book

Molding My Destiny is an inspirational book although I think it fell a little flat in the subtitle From Surviving to Thriving. The beginning of this book talks about the author’s youth in Jamaica and how America was viewed by Jamaicans cumulating with the author’s mother being selected in a lottery to get to come to America. The author’s father seems to be a womanizing dead beat dad that eventually leaves all of his children without making any arrangements for them to come to America himself. Her father not only makes no effort to provide for his children nor to get them to America as the author’s mother does but instead woos at least four women at a time, starts a health food business, and then a church to carry on his false persona. The children, including the author are left with foster families after trying to care for themselves in Jamaica until their mother finally gets all her children to America…only to more or less abandon them again. We follow the author as she recounts being homeless in America, the dramatics of her dysfunctional family, and into parenthood with a man who doesn’t really seem to care about her echoing the character of her father. Eventually the author finds nursing and is able to become independent but not to escape the dysfunctional family life she leads. The end of the book was slightly disappointing in that it read of a person who was resigned to the fate of the dysfunctional family she continues to be part of although finally venting her opinions and frustrations with them. It does not strike me as a thriving person but one who is at least starting to come to terms with things in her life and starting to discover who she is despite these things. I wish her the success of finding that out! The book was overall well written and edited but has some editing errors however no more than most independent publishers do. It does not affect the reading of the book. The characters were well developed although at times I got confused with who was who; the author might consider a family tree somewhere to help audiences to keep track in the next edition. I felt the author described each of her family members in detail enough to capture who they are as a person. I would have loved to hear more about the nursing career the author established which helped her to become the independent person she is today. It is very clear in the book that she holds this profession dear to her and encouraged several other family members to pursue it. The author talks about her time as a prison nurse and having her own nursing company providing nurses to facilities needing them. I think it would have been nice to see more interactions from that instead of just reading that she worked there and a brief description of what she did there. It seems there is always a task to explain things in a memoir of going back in time and then adding what is happening present day with the situation but I think the author did a wonderful job with this. I feel this book has the potential to be a great inspiration to those who are immigrating to the United States and also to children who have simply had a hard life and need some hope. It takes a lot to put one’s life out there the way this book has but I believe both the author and those reading will benefit from having done so.

5.0 out of 5 stars ''The end is always better than the beginning.''

“Molding my Destiny’’, an autobiographical novel written by Patrice M. Foster, is a book about moving forward. This is something that a reader can see immediately after he starts reading the book. Moving forward can only be achieved if there is a struggle, a fight and of course – an emotional depth, which is visible after we read the dedication page. It is extremely difficult to live when you need to face constant pain, defeat after a defeat and when nothing makes sense. Then the life of a person becomes nothing more than everlasting void of meaningless tomorrows.
The novel is actually a retrospective on author’s earlier life. When we read it we will see that her life was everything but good. But the best and most encouraging thing about the book is that the author showed that succeeding is possible. After we finish reading it we will see that the author succeeded in breaking the chains of her own darkness. Also we will see another crucial factor, which helped her to endure, to survive and to live: she kept moving forward and she had faith. Without those two there is absolutely no chance that she could survive and succeed and that we would be able to read “Molding my Destiny.’’ Faith was definitely the key segment of the author’s life, because faith served her as a fuel for making the impossible becoming possible.
“Molding my Destiny’’ could be a bit ‘too hard to swallow’ for some readers, but regardless of that I suggest reading the book. We can learn a lot from it and not only that, the book also helps to understand, to recognize and to learn certain things, which we sadly often miss to recognize, to learn and to understand.
