5.0 out of 5 stars Officer Rogue
Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2018

Jack the Rogue is at it again. Storyline revolves around the movement of Union troops through Baltimore (where there really was a riot) and on to the fields of The First Battle of Bull Run, a Union disaster. Jack is more than his usual at talk back, but the regiment he is in seems used to it from even rank and file soldiers.
Collard has a nice start for a couple of follow up novels. His dialogue between characters is a strength in his characters, while developing growth in minor characters remains a bit of a stretch (does Robert grow into more of an officer now that he has seen the elephant?).

I've enjoyed all Collard's novels and short stories about Jack. Jack is not a guy you'd want marrying your daughter, but you'd love to have him protecting her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent novel, could not put it down.

Once again the author captures the flare and style of writing and speech in the actions that took place in 1861 at the Battle of Bull Run I'm an avid Civil War fan and have read greatly on the subject,, but this is a different chapter different verse and truly compelling. The actions of the main character Jack Lark is truly inspiring inspiring for a rogue individual. Looking forward to the next installment of the series and where the main character ends up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding as expected.

I am biased, I admit it. I have been captivated from the very first of the SCARLET THIEF. Mr. Collard is an outstanding writer and this series stands side by with SHARPE series. Thank you Mr Collard for continuing Jack's journey by bringing him to America. The scenes of battle are, as they are in all your Lark stories, skillfully told. They bring forth to the imagination, the fear, the smells, the horror of War. I look forward to Jack's continuing adventures.

I consider this to be the best book, I was getting tired of all the fake identities etc so to see him be himself and it was an epic story with some great battles too. Interesting ending, bit of a cliff hanger too and very different end so look forward to seeing Larks next adventure

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read. Gives an excellent view of the English

A good read. Gives an excellent view of the English. Lots of interest about how the English army functioned this period in history. Jack's ability to borrow an officers identification is a little strange but workable. Read all 6 in the series.

The best of the series. Jack is now a legitimate officer, and he should continue to command as an officer in any future books.

This series seems to be a fairly repetitive set of stories; not bad tales but very similar other than a change of venue

I enjoyed the story,it did drag a bit in places, but the battle scenes seem fairly accurate as it is only a small section of the battle, and they are quite dramatic in action. This is a story of how comrades can become bitter foe's and are willing to kill for it.A story true, but I think it will make you think how the troops of both sides suffered that day

5.0 out of 5 stars A really good read

I have bought everyone of the Jack Lark books in this series and this was a bit different to the others but I found it really interesting and difficult to put down. In this book Jack does not pretend to be someone else, (an imposter) and not even an officer, so he uses his given skills as a soldier to help in the American civil war. I look forward to the next installment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lucky Jack.

I don't know if it is because it's a while since I last read about Jack Lark, but I zipped through this book in record time.
Whilst always the hero, he courts danger like no other, making it a page turner every time, to see how he gets out of the predicament he is in.
My only negative thought is that like all heroes , his every shot counts, every blade thrust scores, whereas the enemy could not hit a barn door from point blank range, and might as well have a stick of rhubarb not a sword the way they wield them at him.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Jack Lark Saga continues.

This is a clever book, that manages to deliver the main protagonist ( Jack Lark) into the American Civil War,and yet he still retains his lust for adventure and war.An unexpected ending, which will propel him into another adventure that looms.again within the same conflict.Enjoyable mix of fiction and and fact, but with a good paced reading tempo.Still looking forward to Jack putting on the old Red Coat before he lays his sword down for the final time.

Jack disembarks in Boston and is drawn into the American Civil War. An excellent, pacey novel based on the opening battle at Bull Run.
