5.0 out of 5 starsAn Enjoyable Read...mystery, sparks, demons, chaos & budding chemistry

4.5 🌟This story grew on me . There is a decent amount of mystery, hurdles, paranormal elements, interesting characters and spark worthy chemistry with a bit of angst. I enjoyed the first book, but did not purchase the second right away. The thing is...I found myself thinking about the story and wanting to find out what was going to happen to the FMC & MMC. I enjoyed it. Recommended for a quick historical/mystery/paranormal romance fix. *There are some elements of violence & light teasing chemistry that may be better suited to mature young adults.
4.0 out of 5 starsMystery, Adventure , Intrigue, the Paranormal .....and love

This 2nd book in the Freak House Trilogy has all of that and a great lead in to the next book, Heart Burn. I am enjoying these characters and just how normal the author makes the paranormal. The characters are believable as are their gifts. It is also nice that the book is not overly narrated. The characters tell most of the story through their dialog. I can hardly wait to find out who summoned the demon, how Hannah is cured (if and all), more about the background of these characters (Bollard included), and answers to all the other mysteries. So much to be resolved !
CJ Archer keeps doing it - creating wonderful stories with interesting characters. Each book increases our knowledge of the characters and their relationship without detracting from the ability to read the book as a standalone. Great job!
4.0 out of 5 starsReally enjoy all of CJ Archer's series

Really enjoy all of CJ Archer's series. This one -- as all the others -- sets up relationships between characters that continue in some of her other series as well. I also highly recommend her Ministry of Curiosities series and the Watchmaker's Daughter trilogy. They are even better!!!!!!! (But read all her books. Very fun!)
The notion that every author has one book in them resonates here. Ms. Archer does vary elements in her novels but her chief protagonist is invariably a young woman with an unusual (paranormal) ability who is smitten with a young man unable (or unwilling) to interact with her romantically. This relatively early effort lacks the historically accurate details of the Victorian era's daily life that enlivens her later work.

Enjoyed it but oh how I wish some authors would get their facts right. It's no use trying to convince us UK readers that this is set in Victorian England and then using words like 'BLOCK' to say someone is going a short distance away, as in "It's only a few blocks away". No English person, both then and now would have ever said this as it's an American saying not a UK one. Minor irritation I know, but takes away my enjoyment.
