I'll admit that I skipped all the 75 Hues stuff, but the rest of it is fab. I'm so freaking happy to read a book where the "single, miserable female" isn't actually miserable and doesn't just automatically get paired off with the Ducky Dale type best friend. So much truth in the blind dates, and the older sister is so very familiar. Great, engaging read.
"Hot Mess" by Lucy Vine is one of those books that's like a breath of fresh air. This has to be one of the funniest books I've read in a long time, great story, fab characters and just so humorous you really do just want to laugh out loud. I liked Ellie very much, I think as women we all can relate to at least one of her stories, and I also thought her Dad, Alan, was great too with his 'novel' he was writing and I especially thought the conversation about 'getting back out there' very funny! This is a real page turner, before you know it you're half way through the book and loving every minute of it. I highly recommend this excellently written "Hot Mess" and I would happily read more by this debut author again!
I've had the privilege of reading a couple of really funny books recently...Hot Mess is one of them! Hot Mess is entertaining, relatable and laugh out loud funny! I read a lot of thrillers and so every so often I need something more upbeat, and this book was the perfect choice! I always enjoy a light hearted chick lit read and this one can't fail to entertain! Four solid shiny stars from purplebookstand!
I loved this book and it was absolutely hilarious. I'm not a thirty something singleton like the Hot Mess of the story but still found it so relatable! Ellie is how I'd imagine myself was I not the smug married I am instead.
The first book in ages to actually make me snort and actually lol - I got a lot of funny looks from whoever was around when I was reading it. Highly recommend this book.

This was a fun dis-engage brain before reading book. It was light and didn't take itself too seriously so perfect for settling down with a cuppa for a 15 minute bit of me-time. Definitely easy to pick up and put down around normal life (as much as you can call 2020 normal) and you know each time you pick it up you will be entertained.
Ellie's voice is really strong as she narrates us through her life. I loved that it felt like you were having a quick catch up with a really good friend every time you dived in to the book. Yes, it covers a lot of ground and there is no real plot to speak of. Life isn't a plot, it just is and this book portrays that and I loved the juxtaposition between being at work and your brain very definitely being on anything but work. I'm not sure why Ellie refers to her life as a Hot Mess as she seems to have it pretty much together from my perspective.
Relaxing and fun read that won't teach you anything but WILL keep you entertained.
This review has been a long time coming. I actually read this book between the 9th and 11th July 2020 so my memory is a bit foggy about all the plot lines. Fortunately, I have a notebook where I jot some initial thoughts on the book and an overall ranking so between the book blurb and that I did have a reasonable handle on what I thought at the time of reading.

This is the funniest, most relatable book I've read all year - the protagonist, Ellie, lives through the awkward, awful dating encounters we all do in our single days, and every single character - from her smug mum best friend to dirty flatmate is someone I recognise. Every single page made me laugh out loud (sometimes on the tube - embarrassing) and I was genuinely sad when I finished it. I've already got a queue of friends wanting to borrow my copy as I've raved about it so much to them!
It has been a long time since I have read a new adult book that has had me clutching my sides giggling but that was exactly my response to Lucy Vine’s Hot Mess. It is the story of soon-to-be-thirty Ellie who is dealing with the rules and expectations put on women by society and perpetuated by the people around them. And it is bloody brilliant.
It would be remiss of me to not say that Hot Mess did make me think of Fleabag meets My Dad Wrote a Porno. It has the same tone and a weirdly similar set up but since I also loved Fleabag I don’t see this as a bad thing and I think this was released first but just so there are no surprises I felt I should include it.
Ellie is the perfect heroine. Yes, she acts on her own terms later rather than sooner but she is a modern day heroine and I seriously wish that she had her own series of books rather than just a stand-alone novel.

If you're a non perfect gal living your life in the SINGLE lane
a)read this book
THEN
b) get everyone who's ever pestered you about your romantic status to read it also.
THANK YOU LUCY for a book that accurately shows what its like to be hounded just for being a single Pringle (!!) and for (SPOILER) that same book not to get wrapped up in the normal cliche of shoehorning an unnecessary love story into the final act. Very refreshing not to be whacked repeatedly with the standardized rom com shtick.
It sounds stupid but this has filled.a gap in the literary market in such a simple, brilliant way. I wish I'd had this book to read when I was younger!
A fun read with plenty of heart, looking forward to the next novel!
Was trying to save this for my holiday but took a sneaky peek of the first page and that was it - I couldn't put it down! It's laugh-out-loud funny. By far the best book I've read in a long time and if it's not made into a film I'll eat my hat. Looking forward to seeing what else Lucy Vine has to offer!
