5.0 out of 5 stars (now available in paperback) one of my all-time favorite books, you can imagine that I was elated ...

After recently reading Laura McBride’s WE ARE CALLED TO RISE, (now available in paperback) one of my all-time favorite books, you can imagine that I was elated to know that the author's second novel, ‘ROUND MIDNIGHT, was released just last week. ‘ROUND MIDNIGHT is a story of four women, each could not be more different than the next, but their lives, without them knowing, come to intersect. McBride takes us back in time, to learn of each woman’s history and how they all end up in Las Vegas. A city that holds for many, a place of dazzling lights, gambling, showgirls, entertainers, and where life is on all the time.

The Las Vegas for June, Honorata, Engracia, and Coral is much different. It is less of a bright lights, big city. There is a constant hunt for who they are, soul searching, hiding, protecting the past but hoping to change the future, and looking for love, the kind of love that is forever.

McBride tells such heartwarming tales but they are not without great sadness. There is a lesson to be learned with every mistake.

‘ROUND MIDNIGHT was clearly framed with the same gift that the author created her previous novel with – the talent to draw you in with a hypnotizing narrative, characters who you can’t let go of, but eventually you must, so that they can reveal their grief along with a time to rejoice.

McBride hints at the possibility of another book in the works. I will be waiting anxiously.

5.0 out of 5 stars I absolutely loved Laura McBride's debut novel "We Are Called to Rise" ...

I absolutely loved Laura McBride's debut novel "We Are Called to Rise" so was eager for her new book. So happy to say that "'Round Midnight" has also taken its place among my favorites. Laura's writing is so powerful and lovely. She creates characters you feel close to you. She also has an incredible sense of place, and reading about Las Vegas as a real town with such depth beyond the tourist veneer adds another fascinating layer to her work. This is a beautiful novel about connection, loss, and love with many moments that will stay with you long after you turn the last page.

4.0 out of 5 stars I both loved and was disappointed in this book

I, both, loved and was disappointed in the book. It was a beautifully written story about four women over decades of their lives, when I was expecting the entire story to take place in the Midnight Lounge, with all four women being there at the same time. The main characters were fully developed, but I felt the author hurried Engracia's story along. The book left questions unanswered for me, but overall, it is well worth reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Las Vegas: casino story but so much more

When I started reading this book and realized that a casino, with racism and danger plus , deeply disturbed characters were inspiration for the plot, I almost did not finish it; however, I am glad I went ahead and finished this well written book.
I found myself cheering on each character and I appreciated the insights into the many themes that focused on appreciation of life, and most of all, hope.

This is one of those books that you read and wonder HOW in the world does someone put together such a great book. Like life, this book is both happy and sad, telling the story of more than one woman. Like life, you will like some of the characters more than others but I guarantee that you will feel something for each one. A very, very good book.

I have loved both books that Laura McBride has written (if you haven't read We are Called to Rise, do it!) and this second novel was just as fabulous as the first. I think one thing that I really appreciated was how different this book was from her first book. And she definitely knows her environment. True Nevada story here. She has such a way with words and makes you truly feel like you know the characters. By halfway through, I couldn't put it down. This goes to the top of my favorites list!

4.0 out of 5 stars Las Vegas lives

I really liked this story of people whose lives connect against the changing backdrop of Las Vegas. The city itself is a "character" in the narrative. It's a emotional book, each of the characters experiencing loss, but also finding solace and even redemption.

I enjoyed the book. The author kept the story moving and interesting. She helped me to see how we discriminate, intentionally or unintentionally. She also showed how love and caring makes life better for the one giving as well as the one receiving.

I have waited a long time for the novel after absolutely loving ‘We are Called to Rise’. Would highly recommend it, equally engaging and full of human story connecting key women over a period of time. Her writing is skilled and the plot interesting. I loved it.
