1.0 out of 5 stars Very, Very Poor

Alas, a real let down, far and away Mr Platt's worst Doctor Who offering. It starts with two and half minutes of 'sword and sorcery', mixed with a less than original parody of Christianity ("lead us not into perfection, for never and never"), then another two and half minutes of it after the opening theme, followed by lots of descriptions of how blue everything is.

As the story continues, it is dragged down by incessantly portentous dialogue ("Blood feeds on blood!" or "Revenge will taste good"). The alien menace are, don't laugh, "Crocodilians" and it just so happens that crocodiles are what scare the Doctor's companion Lucie more than anything else.

The supporting cast are well below par (Barbara Flynn is great and Sheridan Smith puts in a pretty good show as her altered self but the rest are really flat) and the dialogue is never too far from dumb: "Unless it's a bone brain"; "Lucie, who is in much danger from crocodiles"; "Your prayers balance out the dark of the skull's thoughts".

Nerdy and naff.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lucie Saves the Day

The Skull of Sobek is a decent outing for the Eighth Doctor, but probably one of the weaker of the series as the Doctor arrives in a monastery. Much of it is dull stuff that's been done before, in particular an alien religion that seems to borrow the style of its liturgy from the Book of Common Prayers. Doctor Who writers, do you ever get tired of that trope? (See Face of Evil, Meglos)

Sheridan Smith is the saving grace of the entire production. Lucie Miller is great possessed but there's a nice reflective moment for her where she wonders if she's get used to all the death. I've been liking Lucie with each passing episode and that trend continues with this episode.

Still, Lucie and a few good elements save this story from being a fiasco like Minuet in Hell, but the result is merely okay.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Skull Of Sobek: An empty headed tale

First released in 2007, this is the fourth episode of a of the second season of standalone releases for Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor outside of the monthly range of Big Finish releases. This is a one disc release, with a single 50 minute episode. There are some interviews with cast and crew at the end of the disc.

After two really good episodes in `Max Warp' and `Brave New Town', this confused mess is somewhat of a let down. The Doctor and Lucie arrive on a strange blue world, by the Doctor's design for a change. They find themselves in some sort of monastery which is under siege by someone or other, and there are crocodiles roaming around fighting some ancient war at the behest of an ancient artefact known as the Skull of Sobek.

It's exactly as I described it, a confused mess. The whole story of the battling crocodiles and the people laying siege to the monastery is hard to follow - in fact one of the crocodile adversaries (I forget the character's names, they made so little impression) seems to appear in the story talking to the Doctor, then has a big entrance scene in which he arrives on the planet. Then there is the Abbot and Abbess of the monastery (played by Art Malik and Barbara Flynn who do their best but are largely wasted in go nowhere parts that are a criminal underuse of these two great actors talents) who seem to have a lot to do with proceedings but in the end don't. There are silly escapes and sillier fights and the whole thing becomes sillier and more confusing by the minute.

I didn't really enjoy it, which is a shame as it is a bit of a disservice to the actors involved, who really try to resuscitate the turkey. Full marks to the actors but the script is awful and directionless. 2 stars.

I ordered this CD on 30th September and it arrived on 5th october in perfect condition. It's great to listen to this adventure again, which I have only been able to previously listen to on BBC Radio 7 (as it was then). I had attempted to record it - but the DVD soon expired!
