Peter and June or Tarzan and Jane? Hopefully you’ve read “The Drifter”, Book 1 of this series, so you have an idea of the strengths and weaknesses of the amazingly complex character, Peter Ash. He wanders the “southern end of the Mendocino National Forest”, as he has severe PTSD and claustrophobia, and doesn’t have a job or live in a house. One day a bear 🐻 chases him up a tree a few hundred feet and he meets the fierce investigative reporter June Cassidy......in the tree? Yes! She is running from men who appear to want to kill her. Peter joins her swinging through the redwoods; he has nothing better to do! His protective nature is stimulated by June and her backstory.

This book is almost impossible to put down. The characterizations are wonderful and the complexity of the storyline is brilliant. There is humor and intelligent dialogue. Peter is a hero and June is a strong, smart, and brave woman. I love this series. It is an invigorating, entertaining, and engrossing read!

I read THE DRIFTER and loved it, so I immediately bought BURNING BRIGHT and considered it a winning situation. Anytime you discover a new author and character you like, if there's already more than one book, it's like winning the lottery.

BURNING BRIGHT is even better than the first book. A more complex story with multiple players, it was fun reading as each layer was revealed. Best of all, it defied expectations. To say more would be giving away things end, and I won't do that to a fellow reader.

I will simply say you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taut Action, Complex Characters, Lingering Questions of Loyalties

I own both of Nick Petrie's Drifter novels and have enjoyed each one of them for the taut plotting, complex characters and 'straight ahead' action. I also applaud his interest in our veterans who come back from deployments and develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disease. I worked with one such man who had similar war-fighting skills to Peter Ash, the main character in the series. A new generation of Vets are facing these problems and they and the general public need to be aware where stress is coming from and that help is available to share coping skills.

Beyond that, this book takes our imaginations on a tour of today's high-tech electronics and today's advanced computer algorithms. The action begins as Peter is trying to lose himself on an extended camping trip in a redwood forest. He gets 'too close to nature' when he stumbles on a lost grizzly bear...and is forced to rapidly climb one of the giant trees. Once in the canopy, he enters the almost fantasy world of various kinds of advanced research. For starters, an unexpected rope work trail leads him to an observation platform for ornithological studies. Enter 'The Girl', an intelligent and independent woman who is willing to also be 'one sexy babe.' She is this novel's 'Damsel in Distress' and a 'cat and mouse' plot leads to continual perils, problems and fresh but violent solutions. Who will stay together? Which side(s) are the 'murky' characters on? Description in this novel is 'visual' and visceral so readers who want to 'see' a fine story in their own imaginations will have plenty of input to process.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for fans of Jack Reacher or Mitch Rapp

Burning Bright was an enjoyable read and an improvement upon the first book in the series with great pacing and a thrilling plot.

After the events in The Drifter, Peter Ash headed to California for some much needed peace and quiet. When he stumbles upon a grizzly bear in the redwood forest, he makes the only logical choice and heads up the nearest tree. In the tree he discovers a climbing rope leading to an unseen location further up the tree and so he decides to follow the ropes. At the top is a platform where a woman is hiding out who promptly points a crossbow at Peter’s head upon his arrival. When soon after gunshots are heard below, Peter and the woman go on the run to buy time to figure things out. In a race to stay ahead of their pursuers, the two find themselves in one dangerous situation after another as they race to discover the truth.

Peter has continued to work on his “white static” and claustrophobia and has gotten slightly better but it’s not a problem that will easily go away and will continue to be something Peter will struggle with. During the events of Burning Bright, Peter meets a therapist who talks to him about his struggles and Peter is considering taking his advice and working with someone on his issues. During his and June’s escape, Peter is able to detach himself from what needs to be done to save them whereas June definitely gets more emotional about everything. Upon meeting June, Peter is quickly charmed by her intelligence and savviness which is something he continues to admire throughout the book.

My favorite character from the first book Lewis returned in this book which made me very happy. We get to see more of the skills Lewis has while for the most part he remains shrouded in mystery. June, the woman from the tree, is a strong and intelligent woman who is very successful in her career as a journalist. She’s perceptive enough to suspect the men after her are not with the government as they claim to be and wonders if they may have had something to do with her mother’s recent death. June becomes determined to find out what happened to cause her mother’s death and to find out why these men are after her.

The book starts off with two intense scenes, Peter’s encounter with the grizzly bear and June’s almost kidnapping. From there the action almost never stops and the book has an almost movie-like feel to it. The scene where Peter and June are chased through the woods while they try to escape the men shooting at them in the trees was incredibly well done with great pacing. There is a plotline regarding the use of artificial intelligence and its’ potential uses by the companies or governments that want it. This whole storyline was completely fascinating and held a number of surprises.

Burning Bright was an improvement upon the first book in the series for me as the plot was one I found much more intriguing. I stand by my recommendation from the first book and would recommend this book to fans of Jack Reacher or Mitch Rapp.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peter Ash goes from strength to strength

This is the second Peter Ash book. I gave the first five stars and this really follows up with a bang. It stands alone if you haven't read the first book, but I recommend you do - otherwise you'll be missing a treat.

There's a recommendation from Lee Child on the cover but Peter Ash is no Jack Reacher clone. True he's an all action hero but somehow more realized as a person. Reacher is always Reacher but the author talks about Ash as 'Peter' which somehow humanizes him.
From page one the book never stops and its exciting at every turn. Telling the story from different characters' viewpoints gives an almost movie like feel to the narrative and the whole thing moves with a gathering speed to the climax. As well as old fashioned tough guy action, the book is set in the modern world of IT and artificial intelligence.

If you like Lee Child, you'll love this although its a different kind of book with a different kind of hero..

This is a thriller about a journalist, with a genius mother and father who are deeply involved with Artificial Intelligence, and those who would seize a revolutionary algorithim Tyg3r (Tiger tiger burning bright....) for their own devious ends.....we start with a grizzly bear and soar up among the redwoods of the West, get to Seattle and on from there, as Peter Ash becomes the self appointed protector, a kind of knight errant, of June the journalist....car chases abound, bodies pile up, goodies blur into baddies and vice versa, Peter Ash is still painfully claustrophobic, and the reader rather painlessly it must be said (this reviewer is a technophobe, getting onto the Amazon website is about the limit...) learns a great deal about the perils and possibilities of AI. This is a novel for those who love thrillers, terrific writing, goodies baddies and everything in between, real issues and fascinating characters. You have to believe, and there is a lot of reality, and also with larger than life humans....suspend belief. A great ride through the magnificent North West of America. Enjoy.

After reading the first Peter Ash book I was sold on the series. Bought the next two. This i number two in the series.
The start of the book is fantastic and it keeps you reading far longer into the night than you had planned. Nick Petrie is a very good writer and comparing him to Lee Child is not wrong. Everything you want in this kind of book is there. Good story, interesting people and fast tempo.
In fact this was a solid five stars book until the last pages. It then turned into a high tech and bloody mess of an ending that sort of made me wonder if he did not know how to end the story so he settled for this. I felt that the book lost some of it's fantastic story line there. But it is still a good book and I am off to read number three and plan to buy number four.

Good read, lots of action but also some decent character development plus the female interest is actually, well, interesting not just someone to sleep with in between the action. Relatively low-key depiction of PTSD is realistic i.e. It makes civilian life challenging in sometimes difficult ways but doesn't turn everyone into a wreck, there's hope and ways to manage it.. Really good series.
