5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite urban fantasy series.

Heckfire!!! What did I just read? I never saw any of this coming, not even a little bit. And yet? It made complete sense too. This is book 9 in the Kate Daniels series, and be ready for it, because I am going to gush and spoilers for earlier in the series may occur and if you haven't read the series it is going to be pure gibberish (it's book 9, what do you expect?). Kate Daniels rocks out with her socks out...or on as the case may be...in a tutu.

We've seen Kate grow from a low-lying no-name merc, to a POWER. She's made friends and enemies. Just, aargh, I don't even know how to express all the things that make me love this series. But I love it so. The night I was reading it someone asked me what I was reading and I TRIED to explain it. But trying to express into words what makes me so enthralled with this series proved pretty much impossible and devolved into something that probably resembled the kind of embarrassing spectacle that was once associated with Bieber fans. My love for this series is vast, I walk in this world in my head and it is a mythology that makes sense to me.

So this book in particular? Leading up to it we have seen how the structure of the people in Kate's life have shifted, it was moving toward something. But that structure is pretty effing clear now. War is coming and alliances are and will be tested.

Christopher, the broken man, the apparent deus ex machina that I thought was there to show who Kate really was, to set her apart from her father, yeah, he turned out to be pretty ever-loving important. He hurts my heart, but I think he's going to get better now. And I can't wait to see how his story shakes out.

Roman the Dark Vohlv is freaking adorable. Just the cutest little Dark Vohlv ever, and as the representative that your job doesn't have to define you, he's pretty perfect and I want a HEA there quite badly.

Jim, the new Beast Lord, yeah he done screwed up. Fortunately Dali is a magnificent Beast Lady who is perfectly willing to call him on whatever he needs calling on. She is just as good of a Beast Lady as I knew she would be. I expect Jim will have some consequences, as he well deserves. But I expect we'll see that shake out in the next book.

And of course Ghastek , Master of the Dead, came through, I've always liked him. I'd like to see his story play out too. We don't necessarily need a whole book, but a little more wouldn't go amiss.

We also got quite a bit of back story on everyone. Roland, Era, Hugh. Lots of emotions to be wrong there.

And the rest of the gang; Andrea, Raphael, Desandra, Derek, Ascanio, Samhain, everyone made an appearance and played their parts.

And I guess that pretty much shows if not explains why I love this series. These characters are as real to me as anyone else. The world is built and layered so I believe it too, so the characters they've created can walk there and I can believe in them and feel like I know them too.

As for the events, this is very much a learning book, more so than an action book. But is still felt really exciting. So yeah, we tromp through Kate's past and her future, and Kate learns a heck of a lot, but it still felt like there was a lot going on and that there were some real stakes. And there was a wedding. I don't know, it came down fairly easy and then hooked for the next (last?) book. Good stuff, all the stars, 10/10 would read again, recommend this series to everyone and all that jazz.

This is much better than the previous book. One of the best of the series, in fact. Kate has not only gotten stronger in her magic, it's to the point where she is worried it's too strong and will become addictive. But she is going to need every bit of it to defend Atlanta from her father. It has finally been decided that we are to see how bad a person he really is, which fits because we are going to see a character that was evil rehabilitated.
One thing I really liked is that most of the regular side characters have an active role. It will be like a Pack reunion, but with some intrigue tossed in. Ghastek and Rowena play a part, as does Saiman, who’s kidnapping is the catalyst for the action in the book. Teddy Jo gets involved and there is a huge reveal about Christopher. If you have been reading the blog, you already know that Roman has been asked to be the minister at the wedding. Since Kate has no time to be involved in the planning, he takes over the whole thing, which leads to some pretty funny stuff.
If you have been shipping Julie and Derek, you won’t be discouraged by anything in this book. They appear together a lot. If you have not read Magic Stars, which features them, be sure to read it first! As Kate finds out, Julie has grown up a lot.
As usual, the heart of the book is the relationship between Kate and Curran. There is the usual snarky banter as well as the romantic moments. There is the usual one love scene, but IMO the heat has been turned down a bit. Kate has some secrets but there comes a point where Curran finally puts his paw down and gets full disclosure. The way they work together in the big battle is just terrific, showing how strong they are together.
This series is as good as it gets. Too bad it's coming to a close.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Awesome Kate Daniels Adventure

I can always count on a Kate Daniels story to be full of danger and life changing decisions, friendship and family, humor and the messiness that is living life with shapeshifters, magic users, and assorted other creatures. While Kate and Curran are planning their wedding, Kate’s father Roland is camped out right outside Atlanta and challenging her at every turn. She’s been given predictions that if she marries Curran, her father will destroy Atlanta and Curran will die. Of course she will find a way to change that, no matter what it takes because that’s what she does, protect those she loves. The many fights, including an epic battle at the pulse pounding conclusion, are intense and the wedding planning is hilarious, especially since the couple has chosen Roman, the priest of Chernobog, the Black God, to officiate. Roman takes over the wedding planning, since Kate has been slacking, which adds some much needed humor amid all of the darkness and danger. There is just so much going on in this book, with lots of fill-in of Kate’s family history, and catching up with some of the other well-known characters, including best friend Andrea, who gives birth to a baby girl, which figures into the story in a significant way. At this point there is not a lot more to say, except the books in this series just get better and better as we go along. I always wonder how the authors will come up with something to top the last story, but they always do. So naturally, I look forward to reading the next book, and hopefully many more to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, heartbreakingly sad

Ilona and Gordon Andrews do it again! Seriously, all other authors of paranormal suspence should bow down and sing their praises. Funny, heartbreakingly sad, insightful into human nature and just pure joy to read.

It is extremely rare for a long-running series to even maintain a standard, let alone keep improving, but this series is the exception that proves the rule. Alas, only one more book to go.

Please, do yourselves a favour if you've not read any of this series, buy the first one and prepare for reading bliss.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for urban fantasy fans

If you are a Kate Daniels fan, high price aside, you need to read this book.

If you are an urban fantasy fan who is just discovering Kate Daniels, this series is a must-read. It has the kickass heroine fighting miscellaneous supernatural baddies trope but delves deeper into fantasy and further from paranormal romance territory than many similar series. This series is one of the foundations of the kickass heroine subgenre, in fact, right up there with anita blake and sookie stackhouse but with a richer world mythology than those two series. So if you like the sound of that, start at book one and don't stop.

I've loved every book in the series so far, but this one in particular strays from the murder solving formula that most of these kind of books deal with and as such felt really fresh. I've read A LOT of urban fantasy dross but this book is in another league.
Its like pure urban fantasy, distilled and bottled, and it is delicious. Character development, magic, action, humour, epic battles, a truly thrilling overarching plot involving Kate's father and her bloodline/destiny, this book has it all and at a breakneck pace to boot. There is never a dull moment and for a lot of it my heart was genuinely pounding as I read.

Prepare to lose yourself for a few hours if you buy this. There is no stopping til it ends and then you'll need the next one.

Wonderfully written and beautifully executed - this series gets better and better. More character development which is exciting, terrifying and heartbreaking. These characters are so vividly, perfectly drawn - it's a testament to the brilliance of these authors that in a world of gods, monsters, vampires and even woolly mammoths - the protagonists are so utterly human. The adventure and the battles are epic and brought to life in gory detail, but as always, it's the relationships between Kate, Curran, their family and friends which make this series the masterpiece it is. I laughed, I cried - I loved it. Possibly the single best book in the series so far - and given they're all 5-star, that's saying something!

OMG these are unequivocally the best books ever in the whole world. Each one just builds onto the next. I feel like the world and characters these authors have created actually exist but in an alternative universe lol! I literally have to savour each book and take sips into it lest I would devour them in one night. I'm so excited for the next in series.

This is BRILLANT and now I will have a hard wait until the next one. Another BRILLANT story in the series. All the main characters are there Kate, Curran, Derek, Julie, Jim,Dali, Barabas. There is still the sassy humour that we love. There are twist you never expected. You feel if the story line is heading for a big finish, but not in this book. I normally don't like book that finish on a cliff hanger - this one was expected and was the perfect ending. Please please don't take too long for the next book.!!!!!!
