As a long time devotee of the fantasy/horror/sci fi genre, I am always on the look out for new and interesting authors in the field.
I have found one with Natasha A. Salnikova. Silence in the House is a page turner which I devoured quickly.
Her protagonist is Lana Parker who is in an abusive relationship both mentally and physically with her brutish husband Spike. She is surrounded by good friends in her workplace however, who provide her with an emotional support network. The first half of the piece details the domestic abuse she endures, and is about Lana's desire and plans to escape.
And escape she does to a haunted house with a murky past. The house is protected by a domahvoy which is an entity out of Russian folklore. It is a protector of the house and is a servant of the mistress of the house. I think it would probably be comparable to the mid-eastern Jinn or genie.
The only nit I have to pick is with the time of year the action takes place. Lana expresses a desire to have a New Years party, and states that New Years is a month away. A few pages later we are told that it is two weeks before Halloween. These anomalies should have been caught in the editing and proofreading process. The references I believe could easily be deleted because the action of the novel could be taking place at any time of year. This is a minor infraction and did not detract from my enjoyment of the book.
Lana's investigation of the house and its supernatural resident comprises the rest of the piece. The second half of the novel is fast paced and scary. It has a surprise ending which I did not see coming. If you are a fan of the supernatural genre I highly recommend this one.
