PTSD - how much does the lay person really know? How visible and recognizable are the signs to the average person?

Two years after Eric rescues Abby from a sex trafficker, everything seems fine. At first. It's when their baby boy is born that Eric notices something seems a bit off. Then he tells Abby that instead of shipping out in 3 months, he's shipping out in a week.

Abby hasn't told Eric about the nightmares. That she doesn't sleep very much when he's not there. That she only feels safe when he's there. She doesn't tell him that she feels isolated and that there's no one she feels she can ask for help - that she's been told that military wives don't tell their husbands that anything is wrong at home so they don't worry about something they can't do anything about thousands of miles away. Not even when Eric's best friend and his wife live right next door.

After Eric deploys, Abby starts having blackouts and thinks she sees her abuser in a busy shopping mall. One night she disappears from her home....

Poor Abby didn't only have PTSD, she had Post Partum Depression thrown in for good measure! Just how much to you want to throw a one poor young woman?! The questions become does she finally get the real help she needs? What about her family? Her marriage? I cried and I cheered - it was worth it!

1.0 out of 5 stars I really disliked the main character

I did not realize Vanished was the second in a series. Based on the reviews of the first book I probably would have never made it to this one had I read it first. Abby has a lot of issues she has to deal with. She walks out one night after feeling like the walls are closing in on her. She thinks the guy who had kidnapped her and kept her for years, raping and torturing her, was back and was after her. She couldn't let him get her.

Eric was...a jerk. Sure he seems like he might love his wife, but he doesn't care about her well being enough to actually try and see it from her point of view and give her what she needs to get better. So apparently he finds her in the water pregnant having escaped her captors. He doesn't get her help for the psychological trauma she went through. Somehow they meet and fall in love right away and get married. They haven't been together that long, and she went through years of horrible abuse and somehow she thinks that will never catch up with her? She will never have an issue with that?

So when Abby disappears Eric is on the other side of the world and he flies right home. We are not shown much of him trying to find her or anything. It just suddenly skips to the day he finds her again. He is understandably upset, but he never once tries to see everything from his wife's point of view. She is terrified and trying to get help so she can be whole once again, and she cannot do that if she goes home with Eric. Eric doesn't make it easy on her, or even try and see if he can see her again or anything. Really he doesn't understand how she could have left so he just says screw her. So she has issues, so she doesn't think she is capable of taking care of her kids right now, so screw her. So she went through something horrific for years not that long ago. So he never got her help dealing with it. So what. Screw her, I am moving on. It is like right away he start to bring a replacement in for Abby because he needs someone to take care of his kids. He seems like a real catch...everyone seems to like him for some reason, but he is just a huge jerk to me. He seems to think his wife should just cook and clean and take care of the kids and be fine even when she isn't. He seems a little domineering and I didn't like him at all. I wasn't sure why they both loved each other. I didn't see the connection.

So then everything gets wrapped up nicely suddenly. It is like Abby is fine enough all of a sudden. It doesn't seem to be that much of an issue then. Everything is good. It was a little too easy. Everything was a little too easy. We never really saw the difficulties with any of these things. We didn't really even see the difficulties Abby faced and how she dealt with them. We just come in at the end of the process where she is good enough to try and move on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heart wrenching and real...

This author bravely tackles some difficult subjects and I applaud her for that. I would rather read a romance with a message and real story than another kitschy, cupcake fluff story. In this book, a new face of PTSD is shown. Men come home from war and just disappear but what happens when a mother does? It is difficult for the whole family and when lives are at stake, at what point do you have to let the damaged one go? This is that story. I did think Eric initially turned his back way too soon and was confused about another issue. Eric is a seasoned Navy captain of destroyers and battleships. His minimum salary would be almost eighty thousand a year. That's not a great amount but not small beans. They are portrayed as living paycheck to paycheck and residing in a three bedroom box house on base, which was a struggle for Abby when Eric was away. That didn't make sense to me because he'd spent years being single and away. Easy to save and put money back and in the first book the author made it sound like he'd lived simply.

4.0 out of 5 stars GOOD BOOK, WORTH THE READ

I enjoyed book 2 of this series. It was quite a bit shorter than book 1 but definitely worth the read.
Ms. Eckhart takes a delicate subject (sex trafficing) & deals with this in a non-confrontational & sympathetic manner. How can we help the victims begin to lead a normal life after this hellish ordeal? How can the victim reduce her fear & hatred for the abusers? The hatred the victim feels is as much of a killer as the abuse itself.
I’ll be reading book 3 “Captured” next.

3.0 out of 5 stars PTSD breaks apart families. There is hope when you seek help

Vanished is the second book in The Saved Series. In order to understand what is going on, you need to read book 1, (Saved) first. I enjoyed the first book so much, I bought the second book. It was ok, but the first book was the best out of the two. In this book I got really frustrated with Eric. In the first book Abby had been kidnapped, and sold to a master, rapped, and then saved by Eric, and his crew. In Vanished she is dealing with PTSD. In her mind she thought the person that had kidnapped her, was after her again. She couldn't tell what was a night mare, and what was real life. For a long time Eric didn't even try to help her. I can't go into anymore, without giving away the book. I am happy he finally understood, and was there for his wife. The series has another book, but I think I will stop with this one. I was just so frustrated with Eric, and I didn't think he tried hard enough, or groveled enough for the marriage to magical be okay.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wish I had not read it

I loved the first book in this series - Saved. Eric was an alpha hero deeply in love with the heroine Abby and willing to do anything to keep her safe. Although his outdated sexist views on the role of women were hard to swallow he was still a strong, loving sexy hero in who rescued the much abused vulnerable heroine. In Vanished he is just horrible, selfish, uncaring and cruel. * Contains spoilers * Our poor heroine has a break down days after giving birth to her second child. She is suffering from PTSD and runs out in the middle of the night leaving the children. Eric at the time is deployed abroad, however he is aware before leaving on deployment that his wife is really unwell. Given she has just had a baby anyone would be worried she had post natal depression even if he did not realise it is PTSD. When Eric hears she has gone he flies home to try and find her aided by a female NCIS agent who he is clearly attracted to despite apparently being worried about his wife and caring for his children. He finds Abby who tries to explain her breakdown. He is cold, cruel and unforgiving. He then leaves her accompanied by the Agent who he continues to see and starts planning a life with including contemplating marriage. He does not even go back to Abby to see how she is or get help for her despite knowing she is living in very difficult circumstances. Where is the strong protective hero from book one? This man is weak and selfish and unfaithful. Abby (after being warned he is moving on with another woman within weeks of her leaving) goes back and begs him to let her see her children, he refuses. She asks him to come to her psychiatrist appointment which he does and she explains all her traumas and begs him to love her. He shows no contrition about his own behaviour or lack of understanding . We then have to tolerate a chapter of him apologising to the other woman before Abby moves back in. He is more considerate of the other womans' feelings than those of his traumatised wife who is the mother of his children. In my view he broke everyone of his marriage vows and is not the man we saw in book one. I really do wish I had not read it as I viewed `Saved` as a keeper but will not be able to read it now knowing how weak and selfish Eric turns out to be.

I wanted to read the second book as I enjoyed the first. My problem was that the note I read the note angry I got. Eric's self righteousness got on !y goat. Where was the sympathy and getting his wife help...no just go off and have a strop and start seeing another woman. I didn't hate it but I won't be reading any more of the series as I'm still annoyed.

5.0 out of 5 stars I really loved the first book

I really loved the first book, but had a bit of difficulty with this one. Eric I liked until he found Abby again. Then I couldn't understand why he acted the way he did. Actually I also had a problem with Abby just up and leaving, so both of them were at fault. Having said all that, I know Abby had such a traumatic time in both novels so of course I still love her character. Just like real life isn't, it. Still would love another book with the same characters, but please let's have a definite HEA. With not too much angst!

More raw than book 1, and in my opinion far too short!! I could read about Abby and Eric all day and night. Lorhainne's style of writing is like nothing I have read before. Again I am left numb after reading this book between sorrow for Abby and heartbreak for Eric. It will be a long hard wait for book 3 but I'm sure it will be worth it!

Thank you Lorhainne Eckhart for a truely fantastic read.
