This book is specifically helpful if you have the habit of saying things that you late regret. I am a college instructor for public speaking/interpersonal communication (I also dabble in eastern thought/ principles) and the author's techniques are instinctive and very easy to follow. It helps lessen putting your foot in your mouth or coming across as passive-aggressive. Although I read most of my books via my tablet, I bought the paperback version because it easier to highlight and come back to it again and again. I recommend the paperback for these reasons.

I loved this book--read it in a day--and it now sits at the top of my self-help mountain of books. Most how to books are read, tried for a couple of days, and discarded...happens to me anyway. Not so with this little beauty. Anyone out there love the tiny writing book Strunk and White's book Elements of Style? This book is just like that.. short, simple, and accessible. As Kane shares her stories and journey towards competently communicating, you feel like, "Hey, if she do it..so can I..very encouraging. Plus, each chapter each contains simple changes ( Improv Technique)..which is a 2 word technique that's easy to do and implement in every day communication. This book is a winner and a keeper...I bought them and gave them to my teenagers and friends...MY TEENAGERS liked it!! Enough said.

This book has put so many aspects of my life in perspective for me at the exact right time. I've just returned to the U.S. after 10 years abroad and have begun teaching at the elementary level. It's an intense experience and this book has helped me immensely. The way the author simplifies the concepts of this awesome book demonstrates an admirable model of communication in itself. It has helped me both personally and professionally. It's helped me listen to others and most importantly to myself. It's helped me gain an understanding of what's inside, outside, and the interplay between the two. Thank you for a very comprehensible and valuable read. If the world is to be saved, it's books like this that are going to make it happen. I highly recommend "How to Communicate Like a Buddhist" to anyone looking to become a better communicator and ultimately a better person. Thank you, Cynthia Kane!

This book is packed full of useful information on how to be a better communicator. Each time I pick it up I learn something new. It is not a book I will read once and put on the self. I keep it nearby for easy reference. I think of it as my "Communication Bible." Cynthia Kane's writing skills are superb and make this book a joy to read and understand.

Excellent book. I would have liked to see some more REAL examples on several pages where the communication was challenging and what would you say? There were none. Many good points though throughout the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars An Article's Worth of Content

I was looking forward to reading this book. I read an online article by Cynthia Kane on the topic, and I thought her book would provide more insight. However, I found that the book did not have any more substance to offer than the article. The book is about 150 pages. If one will take away the strained flowcharts and diagrams (see attached photos), the inconsequential anecdotes (e.g., "There's a scene in the movie Singles in which Campbell Scott, one of the stars of the movie, sits in front of his bosses to pitch a project. He's consumed by a recent breakup, though, and his mind is elsewhere. There's a shot of his bosses talking, but all we hear is the inner dialogue going on in Scott's head. This is similar to how a lot of us live every day...), the forced outlines and bullet points, then there would hardly be anything left to fill a book. I think Ms. Kane may have enough material for an article but not enough insight and authentic experience to fill a book. Reading the book, I couldn't help but recall those times when, as a student, I would try to pad my essays with fluff, just so I could meet the word count requirement. Ms. Kane's book is chock full of padding material. The most that one could get from this book are from the quotes of the Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh, et al., which quotes she also used as fillers. :(

I had downloaded this book for free from Hoopla, and I liked the book so much I bought a copy. It has really helped to actually "listen" in a conversation and has really helped me in my communication with my children and husband! Our relationships have improved because of the wonderful knowledge I gained from reading this book.
