A meticulously researched and well-written novel set in the early years of white settlement in Australia. I wouldn’t change a single word. Thankfully book 2 is out (I’ve bought it already), and book 3 is under construction.
Some interesting history well told, a pleasant read but not riveting. Would have benefited from more tension-building around the crimes committed and perhaps more interplay/character development with the indigenous people. Almost everybody comes across as nice the characters are a bit vanilla. Proud of the Keneallys & hope Montserrat a bit harder edged in the next instalment!
Very well written as expected. Beautifully evokes convict era Port Macquarie and the despair and frustration - yet with small joys- of the protagonist Monsarrat. It was a deceptively powerful story. Can't wait for the next in the trilogy.
