Maya is studying to be a Vet. She cant stand to see animals abused so when she hears about a bear fighting ring she goes to investigate. She finds Hale and a lot more on this remote island in the Pacific Northwest. This story flows well. Its action packed. The plot has more about abuse of the shifters. The romance comes more at the end and its sweet. Definitely worth reading.
Great story from authors that I have come to trust are good authors on sight. Maya sets out to find out about illegal bear fighting on an island and gets caught snooping. She convinces the bad guys to let her be a vet tech to the bears who are wounded. Even though he is very much drugged and wounded; Hale finds his mate. From there, I will let you discover the twists and turns on their way to a HEA.
Pursuing a tip to the Seattle Hand & Paw about illegal bear fights, Maya Coleson stood in line on the private island, waiting for her turn to get admitted through security. She saw a ring with a deep hole, lined in blood-stained concrete. The bears were forced out with cattle prods. She began recording the event on her lapel pin camera, sickened by what she saw.
After the fights, under cover of darkness, she circled around to the bear enclosure. She was looking at the bears she had seen earlier, now in cages, when one seemed to actually melt in front of her! She let out a gasp! While still deciding what to do, she felt a hand grab her by the shoulder. Oddly, she noticed one of the drugged bears-now-men scent the air and appear to want to protect her somehow? But he was groggy and could not do anything for her. She was taken to the owner of the island to be dealt with.
As Senor Calderon was telling her that he would have to kill her, she told him she was in the veterinary sciences program at the university and could assist their doctor with the bears. Since there was no escape from the island, he accepted her offer. And as she cared for the bears and treated their wounds, she got to know Hale better.
The next day, Maya was taken to her room and locked in. Stone told her he had plans for her and the shifter. She knew that was not good news! Would the two of them survive Stone’s experiments? Would they ever escape the island?
This was a really good book and a joy to read! I highly recommend it. I was given a copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it. My comments reflect my honest opinion.
Maya is a vet with 2 years left before she earns her degree. Her organization, Hand & Paw, has been contacted by an individual, James McCoy, with a gambling debt who wants to lose his debt to a sinister gangster by having this organization reveal the illegal and terrible use of bears inter-fighting to the amusement of humans and get it closed down, thus eliminating his debt. She gets onto the island and witnesses the atrocities committed against the bears not knowing that the bears are really bear shifters induced by drugs to fight each other. She is caught but convinces Senor Calderon and the evil Dr. Elgin Stone that she can help these shifters recover faster if she can tend to their healing. These evil guys agree but don't know that she plans on healing them just to help them to escape. On meeting the premiere fighter Rampage aka/Hale she is drawn to him and vows to do all that she can to free him and any others confined on the island. This story is an emotional roller coaster for Hale as he hates what the drugs and ill treatment have turned him into. He recognizes Maya as his mate but can he successfully be the mate she deserves after all the twisted events over that last months have turned him into. The HEA is there at the end but the path to it is full of pain. For my honest review I received this story from the author.
