4.0 out of 5 stars WebbWeaver Review of LUNA by Rick Chesler (DJ Weaver, reviewer)

2024 A.D….

Billionaire tycoon, Blake Garner, and a group of private citizens leave Earth to visit the Moon. Blake wants to make the Moon, a tourist attraction and he’s taking a few interested parties and government officials up for a test run. But Blake has information that could potentially spell disaster for the group in this gripping space novel from Rick Chesler.

Problems arise from the moment the Command Spaceship takes off, making it necessary to land off coordinates. Then Blake wants to drag the passengers and crew on a lunar walk that includes a cave system found during an earlier exploration. No one, except Blake, is aware that alien life has been found there, and lives have already been lost. What occurs next is an all-out fight for survival and escape by a few, from a gruesome, lingering death at the mercy of a horde of strange lunar predators.

With excellent characterization and visual savvy, Rick Chesler weaves an interesting tale of space exploration gone wrong, in this frighteningly original story. The progression of events will keep the reader gasping for air and on the cosmic edge, as the characters fight to make it off the Moon alive. A great, compact read that will give you chills and have you watching the ground around you.

Four spiders for LUNA by Rick Chesler.

For those who enjoy well thought out stories that keep your reading because the science that makes up Science Fiction could be real and believable. This book ignores science, believable story subplots and fails to explain in detail some of the key elements of the story. I did plow thru the entire book to see how the author concluded this B rated 1950's Sci-Fi tale... was not impressed!

3.0 out of 5 stars Plot problems, poor character development, and abrupt unsatisfying ending.

I bought this book because the cover image and brief description had me intrigued. I finished the entire book (as brief as it is) in about 5 hours. The book is comprised of mini chapters, each about 5-10 pages long. This makes the plot seem fragmented and makes it difficult to get into the action. The characters are dull and we are never really given a main one to follow. I suppose FAA inspector Burton is the de facto main character but this is another major issue for me. There were also several grammatical errors (simple errors to correct mind you). There are a few typos and numerous superfluous words throughout the book. When there is an extra word added in the first paragraph of the book, you know you're in trouble, although they did get less frequent as the novel went on.

The creatures in the book are interesting and unique although I did have a few questions regarding their physiological and evolutionary background but this was not a major issue for me.

The biggest issue for me was the abrupt and unsatisfying ending. The last few chapters do a good job of ratcheting up the intensity and then it is just over. I left myself wondering if I got a copy missing a few chapters but alas, there was no more. I severely hope this was not an attempt at a possible sequel as I hate this current trend in literature as well as all forms of entertainment these days. However, there are no real plot holes left to indicate a forthcoming sequel.

If you are interested in a B or C movie on paper, this might be the book for you. If not, save yourself the money and albeit brief time you would have spent on this.

I loved Luna!!!! Luna is a fast pace action paced space adventure. The moon is on the cusp of being made into a vacation get away, but first the voyage needs to be checked for safety. Blake Garner CEO of Outer Limits Enterprises is in a battle Black Sky LLC to be the first and primary company to bring the moon to the common man. It should be an easy trip to have the assigned FAA watchdog sign off on the ventures. But everything is not as it seems. What lies in the tunnels under them moon? What lies waiting for the Outer Limits landing party. You will need to buy the book to find out. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves great well written science fiction horror. Do yourself a favor and order it now.

This was my first novel by Rick Chesler and I was blown away. Always been a fan of cool monsters, and the vermiforms here did not disappoint. What should have been an exciting trip to explore the surface of the moon, turns into an adrenaline fueled nightmare as the astronauts have to survive and escape from a new and unique subterranean lunar monster. There are moments where there seems like there could be a sequel for this, but I guess only time will tell. Do yourself a favor and check this out.

Ever since Author Chesler's first book I have been impressed by both his stories and his science. Luna is somewhat of a departure in that it approaches horror. Yes his moon worms are exceptionally creepy and I found myself page turning Luna as I have Chesler's other works. But where in his other work the characters had more depth and definition ( I did like the FAA guy) and his science has always been sound as in KiDNAapped, here it just did not jell for me.

A good read, had me squirming. And if you have not enjoyed Rick Chesler's other book, I encourage you to do so.

I rate my scary movies by how many pillows I use to feel safe. I haven't gotten past three pillows. Books on the other hand are a bi different. Rick Chesler, the author of "Luna" had me at three "pillows" One of the best sci-fi/horror books I have read in a long time. I applaud your ending, Rick!

I picked this up on a whim and it was an enjoyable afternoon read, but felt a lot like the plot of the Apollo 18 movie. This isn't a genre that I read often, but I occasionally will partake in a little space fiction to escape life on earth.

It was reasonably well written with few grammatical errors. I would probably read other works by Rick Chesler if given the opportunity.

The premise that a gigantic colony of alien worms is thriving on the moon without previous discovery stretches the bounds of credulity. On any other moon in the solar system or planet ok. But the moon that's been studied watch photographed scanned with every device known to mankind and visited by missions manned and unmanned doesn't work for me. Th creatures biology doesn't really stand up either, an oxygen breathing organism evolving on a planetary body with no atmosphere and bombarded with cosmic rays? And even with oxygen contained in the regolith it's doubtful there would be enough to sustain a thriving community of giant worms.

Chesler always does excellent research to make the implausible sound plausible. Loved the moon scenes where the team was trapped in the labyrinths below the surface. My one complaint would be that it took a few chapters before the wheels started to grip. Great book!

I really enjoyed this suspenseful thriller. My heart was in my throat for most of this moon adventure. Mr Chesler makes it possible for us to experience space travel that feels real. He certainly knows his topic and how to scare his characters and his reader. I recommend 'Luna' even to those who aren't science fiction buffs.
