Jenny Blake's book Life After College is subtitled "The Complete Guide to Getting What You Want." That's an accurate subtitle. Jenny focuses on all of the topics important for young professionals: work, money, home, organization, friends and family, dating and relationships, health, fun and relaxation, personal growth. She covers each topic in detail in the book and then provides a very useful guide to taking action on them in an appendix called, "The Essential Checklist." The checklist functions as a to do list for readers. I like this idea.
My focus is on helping young professionals create fulfilling corporate careers. Jenny addresses this topic in what she calls a "deep dive" on moving up the corporate ladder. She provides 10 really great common sense pieces of advice. I'm not going to steal her thunder here - you'll need to buy the book to see all 10 - but here are my three favorites...
* Networking is key. (Yes, even inside your company.)
* Want a promotion? Ask for more responsibility instead.
* Focus on impact, not just output.
Jenny calls the book a roadmap - an apt description. It is an easy and fun read. I highly recommend it to any young professional who wants to create a fulfilling career and personal like - and that's pretty much everybody.
