Stories Beneath Our Skin is such a beautifully quiet and sweet story; so well written and with characters that i've come to know and care about; this story is about past pain and fear and about learning to overcome past experience, let it mature us, seeing everything in a new light; it's also about trust, most importantly in ourselves. Highly recommended!
I really loved how the story unfolded and especially how the characters were written. They're real people, with real lives. The relationship between Ace and Liam was awkward and delicate, but very powerful in the slow way they came to know each other. Each interaction they had revealed who they were piece by piece. As a reader I was able to watch their relationship bloom right in front of me and it was beautiful. It's a wonderful story about people who have been kicked around by life, work through their trials, and make the kind of family they want and need. I highly recommend it.
Or maybe calmly intense. I don't know how to explain this book. I went through it, quite literally. I felt the pain of the characters, I felt their joy and anger. So well written everything came off the page. I didn't know it but This story is what I needed at this time, you know?
The characters were in-depth and charming ,even in their dysfunction or faults.... Lots of humor and sadness.. a book I will read over and over again! There was so much charm and intelligence in this story ..I loved it!!
Great first novel for a long time fic writer! There a few small naming inconsistencies with minor characters but nothing that takes away from story enjoyment. The characters are real with a quiet, kind romance.
A master of dialogue, Sloane draws the reader into the slow burn of a romance equally colored by the mysterious world of tattoo artistry and quiet epiphanies between lovers and friends. She invites you to lose yourself in the overlap of her characters' lives, only to fully appreciate the intricacy of the narrative upon completion.
My heart. This story was like a warm hug. It is a simple story with little outside drama or angst. There is an element of melancholy that pervades the story, but it just adds to the poignant and emotional atmosphere.
"Stories Beneath Our Skin" is a lovely healing/comfort story that brings together two endearing MCs and a cast of engaging secondary characters. At first glance, the two MCs have very little in common. Liam is a twenty-two year old English major, attending Berkeley, and dreaming of becoming a teacher. He loves art and is a fledgling tattoo artist. At six foot three, Liam is a quiet, prickly, and vulnerable soul who fills his conversations with literary quotes. He is battling grief, loss, and a dark event from his past, while trying to move on with his career plans.
Ace is a thirty-one year old tattoo artist and tattoo shop owner. He is an Army veteran with a soft spot for children and rescue animals. Ace is five foot four, Welsh, has multiple piercings, and long, blond dreadlocks. Ace's friends and fellow coworkers make up a diverse and supportive found family that nurtures and buoys Liam through his darker days. There is also the introduction of a burgeoning love story between Liam’s coworker and a transgender female bartender that I would love to read more about.
I read this story through Kindle Unlimited and there are some glaring formatting errors in the text that are a bit distracting, but ultimately the fantastic story kept me focused and my attention diverted.
