One of the best reasons to purchase a non-fiction book like 'Bela Lugosi in Person' is to get information that is difficult or impossible to get on your own. This book, entertainingly written by noted Lugosi scholars Gary D. Rhodes and Bill Kaffenberger, is jam-packed with rare information about Bela's career outside of the movies. Picking up in 1932, when Lugosi's fame was at its height, and covering up through April 1944 (when Rhodes and Kaffenberger's 'No Traveler Returns: The Lost Years of Bela Lugosi' takes over), 'Bela Lugosi In Person' covers Bela's live appearances in 'Murder at the Vanities', 'Arsenic and Old Lace', 'Dracula', and the 'Stardust Cavalcade' tour in great detail. Lots of lost facts and trivia are here; including the sad fate of Emil Umann, the Beverly Hills theater owner who almost single-handedly resurrected Bela's movie career in the late-thirties by booking the Dracula/Frankenstein/Son of Kong triple-feature at his theater. With so many Lugosi books out in 2015, this is an especially great time to be a Bela fan! 'Bela Lugosi in Person' is definitely welcome on my bookshelf!
Gary Don Rhodes is meticulous in his research and all of his books about Bela Lugosi are top notch quality works to be treasured by generations to come. As an aside, a very rare Lugosi appearance is unearthed in the DVD collection "Red Skelton: The Early Years". It's from a 1954 show and also features Lon Chaney, Jr. and Vampira! It is also available from Amazon and is very cool! Just thought everyone should know.
This is for the Kindle version. A total disaster. Many photos of newspaper clippings, magazine covers, letters come out as a gray square. Can`t see anything. Sentence will begin on one page & you go to next page and nothing. Sentence doesn`t continue. So I didn`t know if it was just an incomplete sentence or if an entire paragraph was missing. Some photos show as just a sliver of an image along the left side of the screen. Many captions have no spacing between some of the words.
I just gave up trying to read the book. Total waste of $9.95.
The authors have put together a solid, informative chronicle of Lugosi's stage work during the 1930's, into the mid 40's. Anyone interested in this iconic performer will be quite impressed with the depth of their research.
But I have to take issue with what appears to be a technical glitch regarding the book's layout and some of the photos in the Kindle edition I purchased. I'm not sure if this is unique to my download, but there is a gray space where it seems quite a few of the illustrations should be, and the format of the text is distractingly broken up in places, making the Kindle version a less enjoyable read than it should be.
This is such a great read about one of Hollywood's most fascinating characters. The story made me wish I'd been able to meet and hang out with this often misunderstood legend. The book takes you behind the scenes and I felt like I was there with Bela....which is what a great book is all about. The authors keep it interesting, especially for us casual fans that are looking for something more than the usual and customary take on old Hollywood. This is a book I'll pull from the shelf again and again.
Good service from the supplier. The book is in mint condition. I delves into his stage history and films-all about his life. Excellent read. Goes well,on my book shelf, next my Boris Karloff book(more than a monster) an ideal collection.
