3.0 out of 5 stars Not a conventional mystery

What did you like best about Punked by the Pumpkin: A Cozy Mystery? What did you like least?
The fact that there was a variety of strange things going on, it fits with the Halloween theme of the book.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
It needed more intense action and the scariness more developed.

How did the narrator detract from the book?
It sounded as if she was speed reading and as if someone of the characters were shouting instead of talking. Very harsh delivery. Her voice for Eli, the hero, sounded more like a cranky old woman.

Could you see Punked by the Pumpkin: A Cozy Mystery being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
This would be more of a C grade Lifetime type movie with Lori Loughlin and one of those pleasant faced, nice voiced Canadian male actors.

Any additional comments?
There is no murder in this book, but merely some strange events that had some spooky potential, but wasn't developed enough for me and when we found out why (especially the seniors) it was disappointing (original though). The chupacabra was the best, but I'd read similar stories before. With almost no changes, I'd really market this towards the young and pre-teen market like an R.L. Stine.

I think audio format really benefited this novella length story and made it seem longer and fuller than the average novella.

A 117 page quick Halloween read, and it will make you feel like you are there.
"There"is, Sweet Home, which is in central Florida, which is also where the Coffee Cabana
is located.
It is run by Lily Parker and her two Aunts, Elsie and Hildie, and an odd assortment of locals
that help out now and then.
But right at this moment, things and people are not quite as normal as they usually are, and that
is saying a lot.
Eli Davis, Detective Lt, and Lily's boyfriend, has been put on 100% duty time, until whatever is
going on in and around town has been stopped.
Some strange things have been sighted in the cemetery, mostly at night, and that has gotten the local
rumor mill working overtime.
The word, CHUPACABRA have been thrown around, making people see things in a different way.
The story has a very good ending.........

Lily is trying to get the Halloween parade plans made for the coffee shop she owns with her aunts. However it seems like all the seniors in town-including her aunts-are behaving strangely. There's something going on and Lily and boyfriend/officer Eli are trying to figure out exactly what! Then the town is invaded by some sort of alien with a glowing orange head and green body that is seen mostly by the graveyard. Add to that the reported crying of a ghost baby in the graveyard chapel, and people are really beginning to talk. Or not talk as in the case of some of the seniors...It's a confusing and busy time as there is a bake-off, a special dinner at the church, complete with a mini-mystery, and town festivities. Never a dull moment as this story races to it's fun conclusion.

The Sweet Home Mystery Series is a lighthearted series about Lily, her aunts, friends, and a town that makes you wish it were real. I love the way the author tells little bits and pieces about the characters in the books, so each book adds a better perspective of the town and it's people. I have to confess I have not read this series in order~gasp! (I am usually very rigid about reading a series in order so I have all the backgrounds needed.) However since I have read several and knew the characters, it just seemed like I popped in for another visit and wasn't at all confused by being out of the written order. Probably better to read in order, but I am so glad I read this one as part of my getting into the Halloween spirit reading! It helps set the mood.

I enjoyed this story about an apparition that is pushing over tombstones and scaring the inhabitants of Sweet Home Florida. It is appropriately spooky to keep you reading to see what will happen, but isn't heavy or gory. There is also a touch of romance to temper the spooky happenings. This book can be enjoyed by all ages.

I really enjoy reading these quick reads. They are so entertaining & I love the way the characters are described. I like the way the romance is coming along, too. I sure hope that there will be more of this series coming soon.

Very funny. As always I enjoy these crazy older people - the younger ones too. And, they are all characters with their own idiosyncracies (spelling?). Love it.

The editing was pretty bad but the story was a quick mildly entertaining read for a Halloween afternoon. The price was about right but if you are looking for a story with depth, you won't find it here. The food descriptions were the best part.
