DEAD IN HER TRACKS was another exciting addition in this thrilling series that revolves around the Taylor family and the small town of Solitude, Oregon, that they call home. Although this is the second book in the "Rogue Winter" series of novellas and you should definitely read TRACKS OF HER TEARS (Book 1) first, it''s the sixth book overall and I'd highly recommend reading the entire series in order, starting with the four "Rogue River" novellas...
This story starts out on Christmas morning and pretty much picks up immediately where TRACKS OF HER TEARS left off. When another dead woman's body turns up at a seedy motel, Zane and Stevie's first Christmas together is definitely not what either of them ever expected. The story concludes on New Year's Eve, and I liked the pacing and the fact that everything didn't occur within a few days, which made the whole thing feel more realistic. There was a nice blending of mystery, suspense, and romance too, all of which combined to grab and hold my attention from beginning to end.
I pretty much fell in love with Zane and Stevie from the start of this series, and I enjoyed seeing how much their relationship and love has grown over those seven months. As a couple I just think these two are adorable together as well as being true and utter soul mates. Although there are no sex scenes this story was still romantic and didn't need any. The murder mystery was never too predictable either and had my mind working overtime trying to figure it all out. Then there was the ending which was an absolute delight, and by the time I finished this novella I had a big smile on my face.
I read the "Kindle in Motion" version of the story, which I really enjoyed. This was only my second time using that feature and as with TRACKS OF HER TEARS, it was nice being able to put faces to the many characters and watch some of the events unfold in front of my eyes. I'm not sure its something I'd want to experience with every book I read, but it was still a unique feature that certainly enhanced the story for me, making it more vivid and engaging.
Favorite quote, from Zane to Stevie: "I want to grow old with you and hear you sing to my children. I want to dance with you when we're seventy and look into your eyes for the rest of my life."
