I really wanted to like this book, as I usually enjoy cozy mysteries. On the plus side, this book is an extremely quick read. Unfortunately, that's about all it had going for it. The formatting is a mess, and makes it extremely hard to figure out who is talking. There was obviously no proofreading done, and there are grammatical errors everywhere. The timeline is completely ridiculous. Madeline, our heroine, is over the age of 50 with a granddaughter in law school (or should have graduated from law school, if one of the flashback scenes is correct), and she went to school with the murder victim, yet the book makes it seem like they are all in their 30s, and the cover art indicates the same. There is no plot development. The ending is terrible. Rather than 1 start, I gave the book 2, because I do like the characters themselves, and would love to see them in a fully developed story. Sadly, though, I don't plan on buying any other books in this series.
This is the first in the series and the first time reading this author. The main character is Maddie who owns a bakery. She comes in one morning and finds the body of a woman who was murdered there. The chief decides it must be Maddie who did, for no other reason then the body was at her bakery. Maddie decides she is going to have to figure it out herself or the chief will figure out a way to frame her. I enjoyed this book.
When Maddie's fired employee is found dead behind her shop things start going sour for our favorite baker. First, the bumbling officer of the law decides Maddie must be the murderer, since she had a disagreement with the victim. He refuses to even look for anyone else; preferring to spend his efforts trying to find proof against Maddie. Forced to find the real killer in order to save herself, Maddie and her helpers have many surprises, including that the victim had been stealing Maddie's ideas and using them in her own bakery. This was another fun, quick read full of intrigue. The murder was solved in the last few pages, and it was a surprise ending. Characters were very likable. I would read more by this author and would highly recommend this book.
With an ex employee found behind the bakery, she is the likely suspect. Why investigate seems like there was a motive. Thankfully she had a few that believed in her to find out the truth. A nice cozy mystery
I chose 5 stars because I really enjoyed this book. The characters were not only believable, but I felt like the "good guys" were the type of people who I'd actually be friends with if they were real people. It took me a while before I figured out who the killer was and by the time I did, I was almost finished with the book! If you like books by Leighann Dobbs, I think you'll also like any of Emily Page's books as well. Enjoy! I look forward to reading your reviews!🐱
The description claims 174 pages but it's really a novella since the line spacing is larger than usual. It only took me a couple of hours to read. The story is also very simple like a young adult book. The police chief insisted that Maddie was the killer but nothing was mentioned about the gun that the victim was shot with. That is a big hole in the plot. The cat is hardly mentioned. I will not be buying/reading more in the series.
