This review is not about the book which I have read before and really enjoyed. I would give the book 4.5 stars. This is specifically about the Kindle edition. In addition to the typos that have been mentioned before there are sections of the book that are missing. I have spent way too much time trying to figure out if I have somehow jumped around unintentionally. Amazon should really do a better job of reviewing the Kindle editions.
Massive book, but the story takes place over the short period of 1 week. I bought the paperback, and it's a huge book, much larger than the mass market version. Inspired storytelling, fast action, the pace never lets up. I simply couldn't put it down. I read Shogun first, then couldn't find copies of Taipan or Gaijin, so skipped to this one, which is actually the 4th book in the series. Will keep looking for those other 2. Can't recommend highly enough. Only downside is that I saw the TV miniseries many years ago, and keep picturing Pierce Brosnan while reading it.
ok Shogun is my all time favourite book. I read Taipan next and Dirk Struan was an even bigger legend than Blackthorne. Next I read Gai-Jin and it was awful. The story was fine, but it was sooooo long and 99% of the book was just people talking about things that never ended up happening anyways hundreds of pages later. But I wanted to see how the Noble house continued on. I read King rat next, short and sweet and delicious. Then Noble house. The culmination of them all. Id say honestly, It has the problems of Gai-jin but the story of taipan. Like It was enjoyable to read, but definitely could have been 400 pages shorter. Theres so many crossing lines it gets to the point where you don't even care about what happens, you just want to get to the end to find out. But not in a good way. If you like the series, you'l enjoy this book, the ending is decent, but again, lots going on here i just didn't care about.
This is an excellent read, complex and captivating, requiring one to read one more page and never wanting it to end. It’s an interesting perspective politically as one has a window into twentieth century concerns . While the world has changed since being written, some things are timeless and never seem to change. Enjoy!
It is a very good read this. You follow a couple of wealthy guys in Hong Kong during the 50-60:s and an American that come there and want to do business. Yes I like this book and also read some others from the author and he writes very well and interesting. Recommended for sure!
the condition of the book was less than I expected. It is a very lengthy book but the middle protrudes heavily in this copy. It is a great novel. To me Clavell's best. Personally I like it much better than Shogun.
