I have been reading through this series and have enjoyed all of the books. When you begin a series that started some 10 years ago, it is always interesting to see how the author develops his/her style over time and generally, just gets better and better. This is the case with Bill Rogers who has a remarkable gift of bringing each of his characters to life. I had been reading the books through the Amazon Prime loaner program but decided that I couldn't wait for the month to be over to get this one, so I bought it and I was not disappointed. This is probably the best one in the series as the reader comes to know DCI Caton on so many levels. He is one of those rare individuals who can maintain a good relationship with and has the respect of his peers, superiors and his direct reports. At the same time he is growing on the personal level in his roles as a father and future husband. And despite all of this, he is not perfect and often entertains thoughts of self-doubt. That's what makes the character so endearing and memorable. Also the author has the ability to create adrenaline pumping scenes with an unexpected twist at the end that was nail biter. I believe the author has truly come into his own and look forward to more books in the series.
Still the high-quality detective books that I've come to expect in a Bill Rogers book. Unfortunately I read the following book before this one, but not difficult to follow the story lines in each. So, a reminder to other readers that like me, may order more than one book if there is a series - check to make sure you have them in chronological order before opening the next book! I enjoyed this one a lot! An excellent series of DCI Tom Caton Mysteries - try to read all of them - you won't be disappointed!
LOVE A TERRIFIC MYSTERY? AMERICAN, FRENCH, JAPANESE, WHERE EVER? THEN YOU ARE IN FOR A TREAT WITH BRITISH AUTHOR BILL ROGERS AND HIS DCI TOM CATON! I'VE READ SEVERAL OF THE SCI TOM CATON MYSTERIES AND LOVED EM ALL!
This was my first Bill Rogers book and I have to say...meh... It was diverting, entertaining, but nothing more. Frankly, I often found myself bored and thought it was often predictable. I won't give up on the author, that would be unfair, but if things don't improve in the next two, that will be it for Mr Rogers and moi.
The latest in the Tom Caton Manchester Murder Mysteries. Tackles the deadly results of online trolling and bullying. Helps if you have read some of his previous books as he refers to many of those cases. Good read if you enjoy British mysteries.
This was the first Bill Rogers book I have read. An avid reader of crime thrillers and devotee of James Lee Burke and the likes of Kem Bruen, Michael Connelly and Jonathan Kellerman, I chose Backwash on a whim and because it was cheap, ridiculously cheap for the calibre of book it turned out to be. The Tom Caton character is believable, the plot always strong and interesting - a real page turner. His 'supporting cast of characters' are also interesting and well-rounded. I've now read five of his books and the only disappointment is that I didn't read them in order so I could experience the emergence of his relationship with the lovely Kate. Currently just started a 'A Trace of Blood' and enjoying it immensely as I have all the others. I'd recommend this to all crime/thriller readers as great value and a source of many enthrallingly distracted hours with your head stuck in your Kindle.
