Five star plus tumbling, twisting, tearing crime and drama I could not put down. I wanted to jump pages to see what would happen next with the bad guys; and the good guys. But If I jumped a page or two then I'd miss some of the action. That's what a good book does to you! Marshall, a sharp shooter NYPD lawman goes into witness protection his way and drops off the grid. But his search and destroy tab is kept open by old enemies. You'll have to find out the rest for yourself.
If you like Michael Connelly or Robert Crais you'll like this book. I really like Sanders' writing style; concise, well paced, with a good ear for dialect. I also like that it's not all about the main character, the secondary characters are fully formed and memorable. I'd buy a follow-on book with pretty much any of the (surviving) characters in this novel as the protagonist.
Well written descriptions and action, great dialogue, a pacy novel that keeps you reading. No complex plot to keep one guessing, but that doesn't matter because it's the characters that count in this story. They are well drawn and their motivations are clear and human, even the bad guys. Looking forward to the next one from Mr Sanders.
Good stuff; Ben Sanders has certainly made a smart move , moving into the USA for his setting of his latest novel. Ticks all the boxes for this genre of crime fiction , big hero, over the top bad guys, damaged side kick partners etc . The one main criticism is that it either borrows to much from past characters, scenarios in TV series, movies or similar crime fiction with a good smattering of Cohen brothers dialogue thrown in with every conversation . But that said it delivers everything that you would expect in this territory and stands out stronger than most of its ilk. Where to from here ? I only hope that Ben Sanders fines some originality in his voice and his next book moves past this style of writing , because he has a lot of talent; probably profitable talent though.
3 stars as the book improves as it goes on. Essentially faux noir you need the experience of a Hammett or Chandler to carry this off with ease and Sanders is neither. Could make a good film and hope he gets better with experience.
If you like Jack Reacher books, you will love this one too. Lots of macho violence, but a well told story, like Reacher a few "stretch the imagination" situations, but tells a good story, moves right along. I would definitely read this author's next book when it's released.
I read the first couple pages of this book and was immediately struck by how good the writing was. I actually went back and read them again. That doesn't happen to me often. This is a good story well told. Definitely on the violent side. Looking forward to more from this writer.
Fast past with character developed done in depth over time. Many inventive situations and twists and turns. Slightlyn flawed hero we can respect. Great step away from the good but cloned chicken factory production writing of many others in the genre. Fresh, frisky, fatalistic, furtive and fun. Yes fun. Great read, enjoy
